I know that these cars are notorious for shifting hard from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, mine is just the same when it is cold.... But there is something that I am noticing now under load that doesn't sound right. When I rev the engine under no load (coasting in neutral) there is no sound from the engine, but under load in gear when it is cold before the car warms up, there is a definite noticeable ticking, almost like lifter chatter.... when the car shifts it goes away really quick and returns when it hits the next gear while accelerating.

Ok, that was a lot to spew out there, but has anybody had this happen before? Any suggestions as to what the hell might be going on?

I have the same thing, im not sure its from the transmission though. It goes away when the engine is warm. Yours is a high pitch ticking right?

Yeah it is a high pitched ticking.... doesnt sound deep like a rod knock or anything... but once the car is warmed up, doesnt make a sound at all.

The only reason I even entertained thinking it could be something with the transmission is the fact that it doesnt do it when its not in gear.... just revving the engine it sounds smooth and normal, but in gear under load, just ticks away!

Yeah, im glad im not the only one who hears it. I have a sometimes annoying ability to notice the slightest different sound from the car, so i immediately informed the dealer when i first noticed but was told its normal especially when its cold outside.

I just take it real easy in the morning so it doesn't aggravate whatever it is.

Are you using 91 or higher octane gasoline? If so from what gas station?

Ya know what, good question!! I just recently switched to Shell from BJ's to see if it helps with another issue. So tomorrow morning ill listen for the sounds I heard while using Bj's gas.

I'm in the pacific northwest, so I use 92 octane gas from shell. So I don't think thats the problem. Although it does sound like pinging a little, but if the computer is retarding the timing enough and allowing it to ping like that when cold, I think there is a big problem!

I am just wondering if anybody knew of a fix for it. I mean I am probably overly sensitive to noises from my car too, and it probably isnt anything major (I hope) but I guess more than anything its really annoying especially since this is a $56k car brand new.

Well well.....

I tried out Shell for almost 45 days now and I thought everything was good....until this!!!

Seems like that small ticking sound described in this threat has turned angry and now is quite loud. It's been doing this every single time on a cold engine start up for the last 5 days now....

As the engine temp gets higher, the sound gets quieter and quieter and when the temp gauge is nearing the half way point the sound disappears. There is no noticeable difference in performance with this sound.......so im assuming it's normal? SteveTheTech says the M45 can have a louder tick compared to some cars, but he never got to hear this tick...I'd like to know if he would consider this to be in the acceptable range. Anyone else experience this? The new engine now has almost 7K on it.

Well I just took my car in today and dropped it off for this potential issue.... I'll let you guys know what they say when I get it back. I talked to the tech and he said the only ticking type sound he knows of with these is when there is excessive carbon build up..... but other than that, he hasn't seen other reasons as to why this would happen unless there is excess consumption of oil as well which mine does not eat much oil at all.

I should get it back tomorrow, so I'll update you guys when I talk to them.

Didnt get it back today. Sorry! I'll get it tomorrow. I took it in for some serious suspension creaking coming from the driver front suspension too, so I called them and they said they're still working on the suspension....

I think they are recommending an injector cleaning service which is crap. Its not injectors. But I dont know for sure yet.

bad injectors could make a slight ticking noise.

Nope, they couldnt figure out what it is. They told me I need an injector service at 38k, yeah right. No thanks. It doesnt tick at idle, so I'm pretty sure its not the injectors. Its only under load while accelerating. So I'm confused.... Maybe its nothing, but the fact that it does it when it is cold and goes away when warm means something is up. Good thing I have the Elite warranty!

It could be your Y-pipe. There was a old thread where members were reporting ticking sounds from the engine while accelerating under a load. Some found out there was a crack in the Y-pipes causing this noise.

The best way to determine this is to have the car on a lift. Have someone in the car put the car in drive with his left foot on the brakes and lightly press on the gas. Just listen for any unusual noises coming from down there.

I had the same problem where when I accelerate I would hear knocking sounds thinking the engine was pre-detonating from using a lower octane gasoline. But then it can't be if I only use a high quality 93 octane gasoline. After getting my engine replaced I never had the problem again. So in my case I never figured out where the noise was coming from.

I was thinking that may be the case too.... seeing as when the temp of the exhaust pipes rise, the metal expands possibly sealing any leak to the point where its not audible in the car anymore....

They said there was also excessive noise from the fuel damper, so they replaced that while I had it in there. But that didnt change the ticking sound.

nothing to do with gas mine makes the noise too. put it on the lift while the car is on, the transmission is so loud I think it's the transmission or remove all heat shields
