lifter tap(?)like noise after a few hard runs.

I noticed that after going about 3-4 runs autoxing, almost back to back of 40 seconds each w/ about 1 minute cool down. The engine would do a slow click click click at idle for a while during cool down. It goes away after a while... It sounded like when I was low on oil and due for an oil change noise. I don't really hear it on acceleration because my car is too loud, but I do believe it is increasing w/ rpms.

Water temp, according to my Greddy MSS Controller, was solid between 160-175 - normal temps.

Is it the oil I'm using? 10w40 Chevron dyno (went back for a little while during the last couple changes from 5w40 SynPower).

Oil levels remained constant and didn't "seem" like I was burning oil - didn't get darker or anything.

Or is there something else wrong w/ my engine not being able to handle it?

when cornering hard in any car the oil is forced to one side of the pan or the other, in turn not as much oil is getting to the oil pump, starving the engine of oil. some people remove the pan and weld baffles in the to keep the oil from slushing too bad..... this is where i got this info http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem

Um, all the 240 pans have a baffle plate... may not be the absolute beffiest but it's there.

Also doesn't explain why I don't see this problem w/ other 240's after runs...

I'm going to change the oil to a different weight and see what happens.

Also, my head/oil pump/water pump/timing chain/etc will be replaced this month, so I'll see if that has to do w/ anything.

You might also want to try running some oil flush to clean out the pickup.

had the same problem w/ my ka24e.... the oil has a tendency to get sloshed out of the lifters when throwing the car around a lot and you get the tapping sound. Make sure that the oil is all the way to the full mark the morning of the event and that should help. If i autoxed with it just below the mark i would get the same prob. People have gone as far as fitting solid lifters to alleviate this problem

my DE does that after a few hard runs. When do you shift what shift point? Possible your lifter is going bad

i've raced a few BMW's that have had the same problem, both hydraulic and solid lifter cars, unlike the 240 those do not have a baffled pan, solutuion for the time being is to use about 1/2 extra for race day.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'll try that next week when I go autox.

Just put in a rebuilt head/timing chain/makeover - will change the oil before event and see how it does...
