can anyone answer this question--If the last two lifters are replaced on the right bank, doesnt the timing chain need to be removed from the VTC in order to change these lifters? I have had the problem with my valves pinging at cruisiing speeds past 40 mph--I have replaced the MAFS, all of the injectors, the EGR valve, fuel pump and controller, spark plugs, coils, fuel pressure regulator, vacuum hoses--Hell the only thing I didnt replace was the motor and the EECU ---I am fed up with this crap--Infiniti worked on my car and told me that they didnt have to take my timing chain off of the right VTC in order to replace my lifters--As I see it, it seems impossible for them to do that-I think that the chain was put back on the sprocket a few teeth off making my engine run like it is in a lean condition--let me know something guys and also, any suggestions u have would be very very helpful--thanks-

We had this discussion before and you said Atlanta [T3] was too long a drive to get the car fixed? Properly!

We have never changed a Q HLA [do you mean a cam follower "instead of lifter"] in 7 years and a thousand Q.

Cam followers are easy to change without affecting the cam or timing. Generally the HLA need the cylinder head removed to heat the head to get then out guess you could find a tool but you would have to take the cams out to make room.

One tooth off and it idles really rough... two teeth and valves and pistons start to hit. I know it's a long drive to T3, but you'd really save yourself a lot of trouble to bite the bullet and make a road trip. These guys know more about the 1st gen. Q than anyone else in the country! You won't understand until you've been there, but trust me, you should go! Well worth the 10 hour drive.

Right bank looking at the engine would be the driversside bank on which the CAS is mounted. If you measure the ignition advance with a timing light.....15 degrees BTDC will expose 2/3-3/4 of the slot to the left of the CAS locking screw and roughly 1/4 to the fender well side.......1 tooth 10 degrees might be missed but 2 teeth 20 degrees would be definitely noticable since the slot positioning would be reversed! as the CAS only has about 40 degrees of range in the slot...........why it is this much is unknown it would have been safer to half this total amount......guess they were planning for more than 20 degree VVT in future.

Beyond this visible test you must pull the appropriate valve and front cover and look at the match up dots for the chain and gears.

New Orleans to ATL is 480 miles a leasurely 8 hours drive....Alabama is quite pretty in the spring.

I've recently removed all the lifters from the left head (to check oil galleries) without much trouble. They do have a clearance fit...about .001".

Dennis, I thought in the past T-3 has found collapsed lifters on the #2 cylinder in a few cases? No replacement needed? Also, it seemed to me to be impossible to replace the followers without removing the camshafts, or can you just remove the bearings and rotate the shafts up a bit without removing the chain? If so, then this might be what the dealership is saying they did...just lifted the camshafts up at the end and to get enough clearance to remove the lifters.
