I bought my 300zx 3 or 4 months ago, right after i bought it it started making a ticking noise, i took it to a mechanic n he said it was a lifter problem but changed the oil, put some synthetic oil in it and the noise got a little quieter. Its been pretty quiet until a couple of weeks ago and now its loud as ****. is this something i should be worried about or will it hold out fine? any help would b much much appreciated, thanks

Welcome to NICO!

Moderate noise from the lifters is a common problem in higher mile Z32's or ones that haven't always gotten the best oil. Try doing an oil change and running a very high quality synthetic like redline or royal purple to clean and free up the lifters.

thats what i did when i first noticed the noise (ticking), it helped for a couple of months and it got alot quiter but it recently got redicilously loud again, it idles kind of funny also, kind of like its got a mind of it own the rpms will rise and fall at red light and such, it also smells like gas when i first turn it on and let it warm up. is all of this common as well or has it gone downhill and is my engine about to give up on me? thanks for the input tho.

Sounds like my N/A Z, haha! The lifter problem and gas smell is a more common problem, or should I say nuisance. I usually only had the lifter tick on cold start ups, then it went away. Does yours tick all the time?

Oh yeah, Welcome!!

thank you for the welcome. oh yea it ticks all the time, since you mentioned the cold starts i guess come to think of it, its been pretty damn cold here in rochester and the ticking wasnt nearly as bad when it was warm out, maybe that has something to do with it, but either way it ticks after the engine is warmed up, its a lovely nice loud constant tick

Check all the rubber fuel lines in the bay starting with the lines coming from the filter, then most importantly the ones by the regulator. Engine fires can really put a damper on your fun. And make sure you use the right fuel line. You need fuel injection lines, not regular fuel lines.
