4 quarts. Its probably the lifters ticking. A friend of mine who is a mechanic said ticking lifters aren't that much a problem...is he just being lazy and not wanting to fix it? The lifters on my Sentra ticked for like 60k and nothing bad happened.

I had a friend that had some ticking lifters on an old lebaron. Mechanic told them it could blow up in a matter of weeks. The damn thing ran for like 100k miles.

Mechanics suck, unless you are one, or know one. I don't think ticking lifters is a big deal...then again I don't really know.

Check the tightness on your spark plugs. Last time my S-13 made a tapping noise, that's all it was.

Ticking lifters are really not THAT bad, but you can't tell from hearing it. If you know that you have suffered some severe power loss (preferebly compared to the day the car rolled off the lot *NEW*) then you might have a cause for concern, otherwise it shouldn't be a problem. My shop teacher curses Nissan b/c in the past it tended to have problems liket his, and yes, he is a bastard.

ticking lifters are kinda bad because it hurts performance and gas mileage, if the lifters are ticking then one of the valve(s) (intake or exhaust) isn't opening all the way.

When I hear ticking coming from my engine it means it's time to add some oil. It's usually about 1/2 quart low. Add some and it goes away. I have a "magical" engine, the oil goes in, but who knows what happens to it after that. It doen't leak or smoke and there is no sign of oil contamination in the coolant. I've heard that some cars, even new ones, consume oil and that is supposed to be normal.

The oil is probobly just lubricating the valvetrain better and hiding the noise, but i assure you its still there since it comes back. Really, you just need to pull the valve cover and make adjustments while properly setting the clearences. It isn't neccessary to get new lifters, just properly adjust them.
