Hey I have a 96 240sx and my engien currently has 100,xxx mles on it.

I've always heard the ka24de is a rock, and would last 200k even w/ some abuse (IF it's taken good care of, which I do)...

I need this car to last me another 4 years, and I'm thinking about doing a custom turbo set up, but do you guys think 100k is a bit too much? (engine rebuild at this point is out of the question because of $$ reasons)

if the mileage's a little high, I'll stick to NA, and in 4 or so years I'd have a good 160k on the engine

Well.... here is my experience with the 24E. My motor's headgasket decided to die right under 190K.... which isnt too bad. The car was reguraly maintenanced, and regulary beaten on.

I have 116k on mine, and I got it in 11/99 with 28k.... I beat the piss out of it daily :) but I maintain her well.

I dont have any worries about FI this engine, but every engine is different with a different life and a difference in past treatments. Kinda like a woman :) And like a woman you just gotta get a feel for what she'll put up with / take.

I had over 200K miles on my '91 engine before I built a new one for turbocharging. I beat the crap out if it, didn't change the oil enough and it NEVER had a problem. It never burned a quart of oil or failed emission testing (except once when the O2 sensor wire broke.) The only serious problem I have had with my car was when a bearing int the transmission threw a retainer and munched 2nd gear.

Engine reliability is extremely based on condition, upkeep, etc. Some engines with 125K will grenade, some will go to 250K no problems. Historically, the KA is a solid engine for about 170K miles assuming no major items such as FI. DO NOT EXPECT A CUSTOM FORCED INDUCTION ENGINE TO LAST BEYOND 75K MILES WITHOUT AT LEAST A MILD REBUILD. Expecting such spells death for anyone on a budget. I recommend you stay NA, going anything but extremely mild with a turbo on a 100K engine will absolutely spell problems. Don't rely on the few people that have done it successfully, rely on physics and the majority of the cases.

i maintained botht the cars, and beat the $hit our of both of them.hell, whats the point of buying a car if your not gonna DRIVE it?

I'd love to turbo it and just do a mild rebuild in the future but considering graduate school and such I doubt I will have the money... I think for the time being I will stay NA, maybe some head work in the future, and just out of curiosity, how come no company has made a intake manifold for the ka24de?
