so far at 169,000 miles my 96q sensors are original-no check engine light,no codes, mileage remains 22-23 on the highway, and performance feels normal-so what do I know?

It had a CEL when I bought it - needed the O2 sensor and a cam sensor. Got a CEL again when the heater on the fresh O2 sensor failed to function - replaced it and no CEL. So, yes, it'll throw a code if it's bad.

OBDII is a little more sensitive about that... Theyll throw a code if theyre not doing enough, whereas with OBDI they will only throw a code if theyre not working at all...
I tell epople to replace their o2 sensors after 100-120k in their 1st gens if they havent already replaced them... hwoever if your still getting good mileage on the higway, no reason to change IMHO!
