license plate bulb replacement

hi im trying to change the bulb for my license plate on my 2013 m37 XS and i got up to the point where i unscrewed the housing but i cant seem to easily separate the 2 pieces in order to remove the part the rear black piece from the clear lense. I dont want to keep prying it because i dont want to break it. does anyone have an idea or trick to separate the two pieces in order to change the bulb?? thanks

Look at EXL (exterior lighting system) page 120 - in the factory service manual: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/M/2013/

Once you've removed the screws, the outer cover is just held on by little tabs ("pawls" in Nissan parlance), they suggest putting a thin, flat-tipped screwdriver in between the seam and gently prying off the cover.
