Along time ago on here, I saw somebody post a pic of this licence plate holder thing that folded up under the opening on the front bumper and flattened out as you went faster to let more air flow through to intercooler and/or radiator.

basically, it must have been a licence plate holder with a hinge or something, but it wasn't a ghetto rigged piece. It was a manufactured product from japan i think...

anybody know what i'm talking about? i'd like to get one of those, if not make something like it myself.

The only thing that I can think of that comes close is a bracket that allows you to tilt you plates down. I know the Japanese use this on the streets and what not, to not get cuaght. You can sometimes find these brackets attached to a silvia front bumper if you import one. I know the popo dont like it though, hehe.

Fabricating one would be a fairly simple process. You would need a couple of aluminum plates, a couple hinges, and torsion springs. The hard part would be determining how stiff the springs would need to be.

I would say not very stiff at all. The weight of the plates should do a fairly good job of keeping them down. I would try it without springs first and then if that's not good enough, put some soft ones in there and keep putting in stiffer ones until you're happy with it.

I even made a little crude diagram in paint to help explain. I think you guys pretty much understand though.

i think when i get some free time, i'm gonna go check out some hinges and junk to set this up. i think it should be pretty easy...

I hope that worked. This is a over priced carbon fiber folding plate holder. (at least it used to fold for sure).

These are interesting because the faster you go the more air you get anyway. If you're just wanting good air flow then mounting the plate off center is going to be the way to go because around town and at slow speeds the plate should be visable to the local authorities. While at the same time low speed cooling is a concern in some climates. In such climates upgrading/fixing the cooling system is going to be better for the car as opposed to rigging it up.

They are really only good for hiding your plate number from cops going the other direction and traffic cameras on high speed sections.

I would say that the plate needs to fold under at around 50 mph or maybe even 75. Depends on preferance and driving habits I would assume.

I'm glad I don't need a front license plate in Indiana. If you had some scrap aluminum/stainless steel sheets around you can probably make something for a fraction of the cost.

^^ yeah thats what I was gonna say. Just dont put the front license plate on! My bumper is still without any holes or mounting for a plate, and I'll be dammed if Im gonna drill that out just so I can put a plate on. Front licence plates really destroy the look of a car from the front I think, ESPECIALLY on the S13...

I used to run my front plate like that. I just used 2 hinges I bought at home depot. The plate would fold up at about 10mph from airflow.

Final Konnexion makes one. The last time I saw it was on systemqs.com For some reason you can't see these products on there right now, but I know I saw it there before they upgraded the site. Ask a guy named Satoshi (works for them) about it. He responds pretty quick.
