Planning on getting a swapped 240 and was wondering about insurance. I know there is a non-disclosure (or something like that) issue where if you don't tell them appropriate information about your vehicle they won't settle your claim.

Personally, I'm not worried about damage to my car. However, will they refuse to pay for the other person's damage/injuries if they (by the slimmest chance ever) find out about any modifications/illegal motors?

Why would you tell them you have a swapped motor??? SR's are not legal on public roads in california.

I wouldn't, I was just curious as to whether or not they would refuse to pay for the other car and driver's damage if they FOUND OUT that I had an illegal motor in some way.

How would the insurance company find out? Look if you're so scared don't do the swap.

What you have explained is a very different situation. The OP is not trying to insure his engine, but to instead hide that his engine has been swapped. BTW, why would someone insure a 100whp anything... Sounds like that engine has some serious issues...

What the OP is asking is, will the liability fall on him if he has an accident and the ins co finds out he has an engine that is not suitable for the US? The answer is no, they cannot deny a claim because of the engine in your car. They do not have any say in Ca law, and there is no way that the ins co would ever know that the car is swapped.

3rd party liability has nothing to do with your engine. You could hit someone with a civic or a BMW, and in the end you still caused damages to someone else. Doesn't matter on the engine in the car when you hit someone...

Of all the responses to my question, yours were the only ones that seemingly didn't attempt to answer it at all.

Thanks everyone else who chimed in. I talked to a fellow NICO member who works at an insurance company and he cleaned everything up. Just in case anyone was curious, he said that the company would pay for the other car's damage but may not pay for yours. And if they did, they'd repair it to OEM spec or pay you market value.

I dont live in California obviously but i still think it is absolutely absurd that these motors are not legal in Ca after all these years!

No, I helped answered your question. You just didn't like the fact that I gave it to you in a manner that makes you feel all nice and warm inside.

I'm not going to argue with you. Your flippant sarcasm is wasted on me.

They aren't legal anywhere. SRs are awful polluters. And that will not change.

most all southern states you can get away with it. A cop would not know what an sr20 turbo is much less my car. They scratch their heads anyway. If I crash I know I will only get 1996 Nissan 240sx SE retail value which is probably not enough to cover the engine and parts in the car. The risk we take for running our badass machines on the streets.

As far as legal, I can register kit cars in my state so I could buy a JDM anything have it transported to port, register it as a kit car and drive it anywhere in my state I want. It is just customs or the FED government who might have a problem with it. The way we are headed though the states will be self sufficient in a few more years if the greedy bastards in congress don't stop sending so much DAM money....

I want a stick, I've always been fascinated with S-chassis cars, and I want something I can work on/tune up/modify. I understand that I run much greater risks doing this, but so far it seems worth it.

Besides, I'd keep it pretty much sleeper status anyways
