is this viscous or torsen? i dont know how to attatch online pics :( cause they are too big to attatch, so i hosted them here

http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....=5250

it was on a formerly-heavily-modified rolling chassis i bought. when i was towing it home, i turned a corner and heard the locking, "chirp chirp chirp" sound. do viscous diffs lock like that?

thanks guys

if it clunks a lot and you can hear the inside wheel skipping on tight turns, then you have a clutch LSD.

helical doesn't do a hard lock like a clutch type does and a VLSD doesn't lock hard enough to make the wheel skip.

It's not viscous. There's no viscous coupling.

If you didn't say that it came from a heavily modified chassis, I would say that it looks like an open differential. You sure it's a limited slip differential?

well, an open diff would be making no noise... i guess unless there was something wrong with it?

That looks like an open diff.

The VLSD unit has smaller openings that expose the internals. The coupling attaches to the side pinion gears.

i definitely heard the chirping on tight turns, and when it was jacked up turning one wheel turned the other.

what is phantom gripped?

the chassis i bought with this diff was a 89. my 91 had a different rear cover than what came on the 89. the fill hole on the 89 was facing the same way as the drain plug. the fil hole on my 91 faces the drivers side. is this due to the change in year? or could it be a completely different cover? the numbers on top of the housings were the same for both.

the story goes that the chassis was from georgia and had a 400hp sr in it. it was then stripped, sold, and brought up to ohio. it was never finished and passed along through a bunch of people. i have it now in MI.

my stock 90 diff cover has the plugs on the same side (the rear) so its a stoc cover.

****! maybe it was the car dolly that was chirping? i thought the guy said it had a diff in it....maybe i somehow misheard him, cause he said it when i was checking out the car...oh thats a bummer.

i have a kaaz on my car, and since i was towing it and not in it i figured i didnt hear the clunking. thats why i was so suprised when i opened it up. i was positive at the time that i had hit it big. haha

im so embarassed now. :/

sorry, just testing the pic... soo if it has vLSD, there should be a sealed coupling in between the gears... smack dab in the middle?

There is no phantom grrip in there. It would be right in between the two spider gears.
