In a regular sedan, changing every 3mo before 3K is useless as I have learned from experience and speaking to mechanics, but the VQ engine does consume a little more oil than other engines as I have realized myself. I don't have any smoke from my exhaust, but I do hear a click sound when shifting main gears (P>R>N>D & vice-versa).

Should this be of concern pertaining to the topic in this thread?
have you done any analysis on the oil? Is there a clicking when you're driving or just as you shifts between gears? VQ's (at least on the Altima and Maxima) do burn a lot of oil compared to others (I even had smoke from my exhaust during aggressive driving). How of ten do you check the oil and which one do you use? it may be true that 3k miles or less is a waste of oil but not all oils are equally effective so it's something to keep in check.

No clicking when driving, only when switching main gears. I use Mobile-1 Regular.

I'm having the same problem, took my car to the dealership for an oil change and also to have new cats put on at 95k miles. My car hit 99k last week and started making a knocking sound. Cause of the problem? Well even though my oil pressure light never came on the dealership told me I had burned 4 quarts of oil. How is this even possible? Has anyone had luck getting Infiniti to accept responsibility for this problem? My car doesn't leak oil and burning 4 qts in 4k miles is not right. Some people say it's that Infiniti went to a cheaper piston ring manufacturer in 06' and that's why these cars are burning so much oil. I'm not in the mood to spend $`5k on a new engine. Any help is appreciated.

Man, my heart breaks for fellow M45 owners every time this comes up. Search for "blown m45" on this forum and see what others have faced recently.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any resolution from Nissan beyond the engines whose excessive consumption (as determined by the dealer) was caught early and replaced while the cars were under some sort of warranty.

Were you driving aggressively to suddenly burn that much? See, like one of the early posters mentioned, when you take the car to the dealership they rarely track your consumption. It is possible that your car has been burning a considerable amount of oil but you just caught it after failure this time. IIRC one quart per 1000 miles would have qualified you for a replacement engine back in the day.

What can you do now? How bad is the knocking sound? Run a thicker oil in the engine to quiet it a little if you absolutely have to drive it (cheapest conventional oil you can find). That just buys you some time because an engine replacement or rebuild seems imminent... or sell the car if you don't want to deal with it. If you want to try and rebuild it, then stop driving iy to prevent further damage.
