Let's Talk Wheels

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hello all -

I'm considering moving from the stock 17" wheel to an aftermarket 18" wheel. Before I do, I was wondering if ya'll could help me with a few questions.

There are various styles I like, but am noticing that each one comes with a different weight. Does the the weight of the wheel makes a big difference in the car's ability to giddy-up? I don't want to add any more weight to our already heavy vehicle.

Is a lighter wheel better than a heavier wheel from a structural strength point of view? By that I mean, are lighter wheels more likely to bend, etc. because there is less substance to them?

Does anyone know the weight of the stock wheels by chance?

Thanks!

Unsure about the weight of the stock 17's since mine came with the optional 18's. Mounted on the Dunlops they weigh about 57 lbs. However I was running 20 inch chromes for the summer and they weighed 66 pounds. When I went from those to my 17 inch winter alloys and snows which weighed only 47 pounds in total there was a huge diff in pickup off the line. That 20 pounds made a huge difference in acceleration from stop so that is why I am selling the 20's and getting a lightweight set of 18's for my car. Think of it running a 100 yard dash.. would you want to run it wearing sandals or steel-toed work boots?

My stock 17" rim with Michelin Xice Xi2 weighs around 48 IBS

Having heavy wheels will negatively affect the off the line acceleration and aggressive turning.... If the car gained speed, it doesn`t matter at all.

You can also find a tire that is lighter than the average 28 IBS.

So you do the math. You can get a slightly heavy rims and lighter tire and still end up to around 40 IBS . This combo is ideal bec. you need a heavy center rim and lighter tire so when it turns, the heavy part is on the center of the turning force (close to the hub). Whereas if you have a lighter rim and heavy tire, the heavy part is outside, creating harder turn for the center hub causing more hp parasite...

If money is not an issue, get a lighter rims and tire!

to celebrate my new 2010 Blue slate i went out and bought new shoes for the summer as an xmas present...

just picked up 19" RP03's they are SOOO light, and then went with Yokohama ADVAN sport tires. My TL A-spec had the Yok AVS ES 100 tires and i loved those... cant wait for this blizzard to pass and warm weather to stick these puppies on

the RP03's are 19x8.5, and weight 21lbsthe ADVAND sport tires weigh 28 lbs :D

not really that much of a difference, tho these ARE 19s.

Holy cow! That`s pretty light! If roads there are flatter and less potholes, that is ok with a 50-55 series tires...

I think Enkie is a good rims. Same brand as our EX35 i guess? I know the spare rim is Enkie too....

Does anyone of you use TPM on your after market wheels?

If not, isn't it anoying to have the dedicated light on on the board?

you have to buy the TMPS for your new rims too.

It`s gonna be pain in the A_... if you have TPMS sensors on 2 sets of rims (Summer and Winter). The original TPMS installed will be recognized by the car, but the new set won`t. So you`ll have to go to your Infiniti dealer to relearn the frequency of the new TPMS and save it to the car computer. The car computer will only save 1 set of freq, so that means it will erase the old freq saved in the system ( the original TPMS from original rims/tires). When you switch back to another set of tire , you`ll have to pay the dealer to relearn it again. You`ll do this twice a year I guess? The dealer will love you for this!

You only need them if you want them. The car drives fine without the pressure sensors. I run my 17" winter wheels without sensors. The warning light doesn't bother me, if it ever did I would put some tape over it while I have the winter wheels on.
