I'm considering moving from the stock 17" wheel to an aftermarket 18" wheel. Before I do, I was wondering if ya'll could help me with a few questions.
There are various styles I like, but am noticing that each one comes with a different weight. Does the the weight of the wheel makes a big difference in the car's ability to giddy-up? I don't want to add any more weight to our already heavy vehicle.
Is a lighter wheel better than a heavier wheel from a structural strength point of view? By that I mean, are lighter wheels more likely to bend, etc. because there is less substance to them?
Does anyone know the weight of the stock wheels by chance?
Thanks!
My stock 17" rim with Michelin Xice Xi2 weighs around 48 IBS
Having heavy wheels will negatively affect the off the line acceleration and aggressive turning.... If the car gained speed, it doesn`t matter at all.
You can also find a tire that is lighter than the average 28 IBS.
So you do the math. You can get a slightly heavy rims and lighter tire and still end up to around 40 IBS . This combo is ideal bec. you need a heavy center rim and lighter tire so when it turns, the heavy part is on the center of the turning force (close to the hub). Whereas if you have a lighter rim and heavy tire, the heavy part is outside, creating harder turn for the center hub causing more hp parasite...
If money is not an issue, get a lighter rims and tire!
