As myself owning a '94 altima and my friend owning an '89 240sx, we debate on a regular basis abotu these two cars. I've seen faster times come out of the altima's than I have the 240's, DE or not. I watched two hatch's run 17.7's, 5 speeds for that matter, while I was in INDY. Gibbo ran 17.1 with his coupe so I'm lead to believe that these two drivers were terribly bad. There is no way that the 240 is hard to launch being it is RWD, and there should be any issues with massive wheel spin since they only have maybe 120 ft-lbs to the wheels. My altima pulls away from gibbo's 240 at the middle of first and I end up with about a car and a half int he 1/4. My auto is good for 16.7's int he 1/4 pretty consistantly. I find it amazing that my auto weighing 2950 lbs. is faster than any of the near stock 240 KA's I've ever seen run.

Really slow vs. pretty darn slow.

Sounds exciting.

What do you want us to debate about? Everyone already knows the Alty's and 240's both are slow as all hell. And if the '89 wasn't an auto, I bet it would hang with you.

I'll race you. Our cars run really close. My best time w/ the auto is 16.6 @ 84. I am going tomorrow (Saturday) to run one last time w/ the auto. Wonder if I can beat the 16.6? I think I can, I have some new techniques.....

Ben,Is your 240 ccompletely stock?

Altiman94-Make sure that you look at all the factors of the cars raced there at IRP. Driver input does have a lot to do with the outcome of a race or times. But the two 240's were not extactly the same were they? Also, there are a lot of factors that are harder to count from just looking at the cars. What type of shape is the engine or transmission in?

I could have sworn that the 89 240 hatchback pulls a 16.1 stock for the 5 speed? I am actually curious as to what it does 1/4 as I am interested in getting one. Stock of course.

car and driver and other mags tested the 89 24oSX 5spd at 16.2, now thoes were brand new cars then mind you, so a mid 16 to higher 16 second run can be expected with a 5spd

17 second 1/4 miles are crap... poorly maintained vehicles and/or bad drivers.

Also, the torque rating is a good chunk more than 120 at the wheels. The stock flywheel torque numbers are around 160 or more. So to the wheels that is still better than 140. The KA puts out some 'twist"!

the stock numbers are at 155, mind you that automatics lose more to the wheels than a 5 speed, even said a 5 speed 240/altima may put down 130 ft-lbs at most.

no, i doubt he's saying that, but perhaps when repo man got his car, he wasnt the first owner, and the owner before him didnt take perfect care of hte car perhaps?, and also, i have seen plenty of 16sec runs with stock 24o's, ive never seen a bone stocker tap into 15s, but 16s are easily accomplishable

Where did I say Repo was a bad driver? He is only a bad driver when he is shooting at people on 465. lol I think that was Maine that made the bad driver comment. N E way, I put the comment about driver input up, because that is a major factor period (good or bad).

I don't understand people trying to race muscle cars when they know they will lose. That's why the domestic v8 owners hate the import guys.

what?

Ohh, I get it. I thought you asked why domestic owners race cause they will loose. I was like uhhh.....But you meant why do alot of import people race domestics cause the imports will loose. Ok, I understand now, heh.

Is this a handling or just acceleration debate? I honestly hope you two aren't debating about handling. :jump

I'm not hugely impressed with the stock handling of either cars.

The 240SX is too soft in it's stock form. Coilovers do wonders. :)

as far as acceleration, those 17+ times seem high. perhaps the drivers weren't very good. my friend ran a 16.5 in his 89 240 hatch with no mods except a broken exhaust.
