Got our first real snow in the buffalo area, so had to go out and play as I have just fitted 4 new Pirelli Wintersport tires. Found an unplowed steep hill and tried to accelerate up with and without TCS and at different rates of acceleration. Here are the results

1. No TCS, full throttle - fish tailed but gripped and made it up2. No TCS part throttle - sailed up no problem3. TCS on, full throttle - TCS kicked it at the start and made it up hill easily with no fish tailing4. Braking on way down was totally controllable with ABS kicking in intermittently and stopping distance nice and short

All in all awesome tires which also have great dry road handling given they are a Snow tire

How much snow? 3 inches?

I went out for some grub 'n such and it's snowing here. I've got BFG's this year versus the Bridgestone RE's last year, and noticed much better grip. Still pondering true snow tires. Do the Pirelli's run the same risk of "curing" on dry pavement if it gets in the 60 degree range?

I hope my studded tires in the rear and my all seasons in the front will be good enough, because I cant afford anything else.... But good to hear good reports of the Q doing well in the snow!

There was about 2 inches on the hill. I forgot to mention that I also took my wifes 4 wheel SUV with Michelin Pilots on the same hill about an hour later. Traction was good in 4WD, poor in 2WD and braking was definately worse than with the Q wearing the Pirellis. Tire Rack has a good write up on them which should give you a feel for the limitations in dry, hot conditions

Here's where "Q1" stayed when it snowed last year... even if I was a good snow driver, we only see the white stuff every year or two and I'm afraid of all of the other crazies on the road!

Normally she'd be in the garage, but I had just moved into this house and still had the garage cluttered up with moving boxes and stuff...

:D

I'm with you Heath, not worth risking the Q to any number of things that can/will go wrong when driving in the frozen stuff. Even if you are the best winter driver in the world, can't control all the other idiots who can barely drive in good conditions!!!!LOL That being said, if one doesn't have the luxury of a second car to drive in bad conditions, it definitly sounds like the Q is very capable with 4 good snow tires.Keep us poster rover with the harsh Buffalo winter and how the Q does in the white stuff!!!!Jeff

If you've ever listened to Jeff Foxworthy or any of the other "southern" comedians - you know that any mention of snow in our forecast requires everyone's immediate presence at the nearest bread asile and a stock-up of milk and canned goods! I just don't leave the house...

Actually back in 2000 we had a week of very cold weather following a major (about 6") snow, and after a few days I got the Q out. In the day it was mostly slushy stuff that would freeze again at night. With careful driving, the Q seemed as stable as anything I've driven in ice or slush in the past... and that's with all-season tires. Now I have the truck, but with no LSD or 4wd and light on the tail end, I bet it would be a terrible snow vehicle!

It is amazing, even here in Pa. When the news starts flipping out over a 3-6 inch snow storm, the supermarkets are JAMMED with people stocking up for 24??? hours in the house!!!! How many meals can someone eat????? When the forecast calls for a big snow storm, I head the other direction from the supermarket..............THE LIQUOR STORE!!!!!Jeff

Heath... That scene is what I have seen the last few days, and probably for the rest of the year.....

When it gets really bad outside, I have the suburban to take on.... Otherwise, I'll be able to get the grand prix.... might as well wreck the car that doesnt matter!!!!

Personally, I wouldnt mind it if someone rearended me.... my trunk and rear bumper are all scratched up and I want them fixed..... LOL!!!!!

I bought Pirelli almost one week ago that rover3l was talking about. They helped me maybe 10%. There was about 4 inches snow just on the road before the real storm started. They are good at turning. But I couldnt even pass a hill. I will try to get Blizzak. I love my J but it gives me such a difficult time in snow:(

Extra weight in the rear really helps....

Its amazing how well the TCS works...... On my way to school today, there is an ice patch right when you enter the parking lot, so i flipped off the traction and decided to do a little slide, when I ended up doing 3/4 of a donut.... On the way home, I tried it again with TCS on, and i couldnt even get it to slide.... Snows plus TCS is gonna be golden.!

This is interesting as here in the Buffalo area we have now had about 6 inches of snow and I have tried the Q with Pirelli's on a variety of surfaces, packed snow, loose snow, hill with packed and hill with loose snow. I have been amazed at how good the vehicle is performing. It seems to have good traction and TCS makes a big difference. I have tried to spin it on a parking lot and the TCS seems to keep it on the straight and narrow.

Could it be that the J30 has less weight on the rear?

How much does a LSD help out? Aren't they more likely to burn out in the snow than a regular diff?

Ugh....I'll be driving up to Buffalo in my S12 to visit family for Christmas...I hope the weather is better then. I grew up there but booked south as soon as I graduated from UB.

After 3 years in Raleigh I'm spoiled..whole city shuts down if the predict any snow accumulation, people stock up like you guys were saying, bread shelves are emptied. I can't stand the snow anymore, I'm dreading going up north for that reason. I always hated it the whole time I lived up there, but now even more so.
