Spoke to the air resource board today; they said the turbo kit is only legal if it has an EO [Executive Order] for your year/make/model.. There are none for the S13 KA24DE

Engine swaps; to swap your engine you must follow these rules:

- Has to be the same year or newer engine

- All smog equipment HAS to be correctly installed & working

- If the car is CA certified the engine has to be CA certified

- Engine must be from another vehicle of similar GVW [Gross Vehicle Weight]

So what does this mean?

You can swap a KA24DE from a 95-98 then put a CARB Certified turbokit on it.

You will have to take it to a smog ref and have them verify the 4 items mentioned above & show that the turbo kit has an EO.

Basically CARB only cares about your engine. The way they see it is like this:

BODY - 1993 Nissan 240SXENGINE - 1998 Nissan 240SX

So basically anything that is CARB certified for a 95-98 you can put into your S13 [as long as it has a 95-98 engine].

[note: your vehicle will have to meet emissions standards for that year engine.]

Too bad there are no turbo kits with CARB EO's for any make or model 240SX. I know Greddy is trying to get their kit fitted with an EO number, but they said they wont know until at least the end of the year. So as it stands there is no legal way to turbocharge your 240 according to CA smog regulations.

Solution: Move to Florida! No emissions! (at least not now) but plenty of rice!

The sr was never imported to the US, therefore its illegal. I think he might have left out a few details.

Sorry.. I spoke to the smog ref a short while ago; he said it cannot be done because there are no vehicles equipped with an SR20DET in the United States [no stock anyways]

I forget exactly what he said but basically the engine has to be in other cars as a stock engine; only then can you swap it.

As far as the US or CA certifications;

If you have a CA certified 240SX and put a US certified engine it will be illegal/fail.. it has to be CA certified if it's going into a CA certified car..

Basically like..

Is the vehicle CA Certified? If yes - ONLY a CA certified engine can be swappedIf no - ANY US certified engine can be installed [obviously including CA certified]

I thought there were CARB approved kits for the 95-98 S14 =/

Or you could just get slick older car(read pre1974) and drop whatever motor you want into it.

You can add parts to the newer motor that has EO numbers after the motor has been approved as well. At least that is my interpretation of what I read on the CA site that explains this.
