I talked to a couple people, one is a retired head of Motor Vehicles here in NY state and another is the guy that runs the local Motor Vehicle office.

According to what I have been told, it IS legal to put the RB motor in a car, IF the following things take place.

1) The motor being installed MUST be from a vehicle that is newer than the vehicle you are putting it into. You must have proof of this(VIN tag from firewall)

2) All emmisions equipment that was origionally installed on this motor from the factory must be installed and functional.

3) You must change your registration AND title to reflect the new, 6 cylinder motor. (MVA-2 form and like a $10 fee)

4) The vehicle MUST pass safety inspection.

That is all.

So, if you are in NY, here is your way. In other states, I suggest you do the same thing I did and ask the people that actually know.

That's for a domesticated motor into a domesicated car. Per EPA laws the RB is federally illegal.

certified configuration is an engine or engine-chassis design that has been certified or approved by the EPA to meet certain emission standards prior to the production of vehicles with that specific design. Evidence of federally approved testing must be available upon request.Vehicle Repairs

Anyone can perform the necessary work on a vehicle to correct tampering-related problems, although it is recommended that the services of a facility with experienced repair technicians be used. Vehicle warranties usually cover emission control systems and devices. However, if these components are tampered with, the manufacturer may not honor the warranty because the car has not been maintained according to the manufacturer's specifications.

You may remove an emission system or device at any time if you are replacing it with one that is specified for that vehicle and is equally effective in reducing emissions. For example, it is acceptable to replace the engine of a vehicle if:the replacement engine is certified by the EPA

Per the former "Director of the DMV Division of Vehicle Safety & Clean Air" for New York State, the RB is fine to install in the car as long as, like I said it is the same year or newer engine. Per the head of the local Motor Vehicle office, it is also alright as long as it has all the emmission control equipment installed and functional.

I am not going to argue with you one little bit, all I am doing is passing along the information given to me by the people that make stuff happen here in NY.

I dont understand if you are telling me that I am wrong or not, but if you would like to contact me about the people I spoke with, get ahold of me.

The sticking point here will be there are no US emmissions equpment on the RB and that's where I think your friends mis-understand the question.

But here's to hoping and good luck.

MY CAR PASSED EMISSIONS WITH NON-US APPROVED EMISSIONS EQUIPMENT. IT ALSO DIDN'T HAVE A EGR HOOKED UP. TO GET A EPA CERT/EXEMPTION WITH THIS CAR SHOULDN'T BE TO HARD..... BUT LIKE JON SAID I WAS TOLD THE SAME THING BY A MARICOPA COUNTY MVD AGENT HERE IN AZ.
