Hey guys,

I've been doing a LOT of research into legal Cali swaps. The RB, Silvia SR, and CA are NOT legal because the donor car was not in production in the US. Motorex Skyline RB's are legit, but that's a REALLY roundabout way to get the motor alone. For the money you'd spend, keep the RB in the Skyline.

You need an engine that will pass the emission standards for the 97 KA24DE... which will be hard. The engine must be from a certified Cali-car, which cuts your options down A LOT. It must maintain all the OEM emissions equipment from the donor car. It's going to be tough.

I'll be the first to tell you that it's a waste of money, but if you have your heart set on it, it can be done. I spoke with a BAR referee breifly and the results on our conversation are on my thread about swapping a VG30DETT into the S13. Check it out. I'm only scratching the surface here, but it'll give you an idea of what you're up against.

The OBDII test does not involve "sniff test." They hook directly into your ecu and check things like vin#, mileage, codes, and readiness. I don't know if Cali is the same way, but in GA if you fail the OBDII test, there is no alternative: i.e. You cannot ask to pass sniffer if you fail the computer test.

so basically, all you need to do is find someoen you know who can pass smog for you if you get an sr20det? and why would the poes ask you to pop your hood when you get pulled over?

i didnt realize it was so hard for a sr swap. i thought a lot of 240sx owners had sr20's in their cars. how do they get away with it?

-edit-i was searching this forum, and i was wondering what the visual test was? i got that to pass smog, you just need the benjamins, but i dont quite know what the visual test is. thanks

I believe the visual is to insure you have not removed or altered any of the smog equipment on the vehicle. I thinks its funny because if I COULD alter the equipment AND still get the car to pass the sniff test, what does it matter?

Because they get busted BIG TIME for that ****. It's getting really hard to find someone that will pass you like that because the state is cracking down on those shops in a big way. They send out gov't emloyees to try to bribe smog shops and if they take it, they get busted.
