so i have a 1990 240sx hatch with the stock ka24e motor w/ 70k on it. the car has a decent amout of power but i would like to swap it with a more tuner friendly enigine such as a sr20det. my problem is tht i live in connecticut and i dont know if its legal to swap in a smaller motor than the orginal motor. does anyone know about this?

i would like to debate you on that sir, the KA has more potential than the SR, not bashing people out there that have badazz SR's, just look up and see what people have done with the ka though. /troll

in answer to your question, you probably wont be able to pass smog if you have an sr. therefore making it illegal

as long as it passes emissions it shouldn't matter.

i dont have a problem with my ka24 but its just a single cam motor and all i could find on it is a cheap turbo kit and few other small things, so if a sr wont do is it worth it to swap in a ka24de?

lol

You will never be able to legally swap a SR20DET into your car because it was never offered in the US. You can legally swap ANY NON diesel or hybrid motor into you car that was produced the same year as your car and newer as long as you have the state pass it saying you did the swap properly and kept all emission related equipment. Unless you don't have smog there and can get away with not having a car that can pass a visual or diagnostic exam.

You can look into it more if you search

yea that seems to be the legal way to go. i think i will build it out of the car tho so i could really strip it and clean it first plus my ka24e has 70000 original miles, i kinda wanna use it up before i put in a different motor, do u know if i could keep my same transmission with the dohc?

It's not legal to swap an SR in many states, but some are more lax than others. The same thing applies to turboing a KA. The only actual legal swaps are motors that were released for sale in the U.S. with the same drivetrain configuration and that are newer than the car that it's going into.

That pretty much narrows your choices down to the VQ35, VH45 and LSx. But you can't just swap 'em and and run 'em on the street. Gotta make sure they're emissions compliant.

But if I were you, I'd just find a hook-up man who'll pass your car regardless, keep the KA24E and wait until Martins_240sx finishes and starts selling his Twin Charged kits for the Sohc...

true-pig-build-t317694.html

Start reading at page 7. That's when it goes from a beastly Sohc KA-T build to a Twin Charged build...

sweet thanks.it seems like a crazy idea. the only thing tht scares me is all the fab work hes been doing and hes still having problems with internals. so i guess i need to find the RIGHT shop first. but this is def an idea up in the air for when im ready for a new motor/build once spring comes.........

Just wait until he's done and has worked out the kinks. What he's doing is revolutionary for a KA. His internals didn't have problems because of the twin charging. It hasn't run with the supercharger yet. His car overheated while making over 450hp & tq and blew it's headgasket because his fans stopped working while driving for some reason. He then took that as an opportunity to pull the motor for the blower install and make sure it's done right.

Maybe you should drop him a line and inquire what all might be included in the kit he plans to sell and what fab work might still be needed. It might be too early to tell, but you never know...

I for one have no doubt in that guy's ability to see that project through to completion. But bringing it to market is just something we'll have to keep our fingers crossed on...

Discussed to death. If you want to discuss turboing a ka, go lurk the ka forums.
