hey buddy, I did read the post. I was offering some additonal info besides what he asked for to make sure he understood that he cannot do specifc engines. I have a friend named Joe (kamin) on some of the other 240 boards and he thought he could get away with "legally" swapping an rb into a 97 240sx because he lived in tuscon (lax emissions standards). Well he got caught and has to remove it from his car now. He was misinformed and didn't understand the letter of the law. I am trying to save our friend here from uneccessary expense of swapping the wrong motor into his car. My 2 cents is to keep the ka and boost it. This isn't fresh alloy so lose the attitude ok. thanks

Hey.. I dont have an attitude -- your post said we are talking about illegal engines when infact he asked about legal ones..

I don't wanna start an argument or anything so lets drop it.. how did you friend get caught if there are no emissions laws/rules there?? That would suck to spend that much (or that amount of time if not as much money) on something and get caught

;) I said (lax emissions standards) not no emissions standards. It turns out he was right about tuscon but he commutes into maricopa county and they aren't cool like that so he got busted. I got into the illegal engine discussion because someone above metioned sr's. I don't want this guy to regret owning this car and tuning it. I wanted him to know what could not be swapped because what ever was left over would be an option if the $$$ was right. Cali is a *****, my gf wants me to move to San Diego but I don't want to have to deal with the emissions nazis. AZ is so easy. i drive in, they plug my computer in and check my gas cap. Computer says i'm ok and I leave with a clean bill of health.

ok lets review what we know...

-engine must be from same year as chasis or newer.

-all original emissions equipment must be intact.

-any motor that was not sold in the US as a factory option is illegal...any others?

- If being swapped into a Cali car, the engine must have originally been a Cali certified engine.

- Must be from the same class of car. This refers to "light duty trucks" and whatnot. Any engine from a CAR can go into any other CAR, but no Ford Super Duty or GM HD engines into cars (as if they would fit).

- Even after a "legal" swap, the car must be inspected and certified by a smog referee.

- No Chevy engines are allowed into Fords or vice versa. This isn't a law so much as a rule of thumb unless you like bullet holes in both your car and your body. Crazy auto zealots out there...

- Also, no "gay" swaps. Nobody likes seeing an 80's Honda CVCC in a 70 Chevelle. Again, not a law, just a suggestion.

some one started talking about how you have a grace period when you move from another state. and this reminded me of something that a guy who has an ls1 or something (a corvett engine) swapped into his Ferrio at my fathers shop here in Cali well he had that engine put in his car and he tryed to get that Specialty car or Kit car thing from the DMV but they told him that since he wasn't using the Vett transmission that he couldn't get that so what he did was. He went to arizona rented an apt. for a month and got a P.O Box then registered the car in arizona because I guess they dont have emission laws like ours. Then he stoped renting the apt and kept the P.O Box I guess the P.O Box counts as a residency and it allows him to kepp getting the car registered there all the while driving it in California.

Technically. If you commute into an emissions restricted area or operate a vehicle in an emissions restricted area you are legally obligated to obey all the laws. You can get away with it as long as you don't make a spectacle of your self by street racing, blowing off in public, drifting, and general behavvior that will get you pulled over.
