these are not just for big off-road trucks anymore. after installing it, i fell in love with mine, as they are insanely bright- i mean REALLY bright!
i found a few cool looking smaller units(linked below), you guys might be interested in checking out for your ride.
on the rogue, i hooked it up to the high-beam via a relay, and all i do is flick the high-beam, and it comes on. on the santa fe, i left it via the wiring harness.

I wonder if they're actually legal for street use.

Eh, they are wired to high beams, so he shouldn't really have a problem.

Up here, I think wired to the high beams might be a ticket.

any use of aux lighting on legal streets, is generally illegal(by aux, i mean anything that didnt come with the car). but the possession of them is NOT(at least not in most states). i'd check your state traffic laws.
i know in some area's its illegal to have any lights ABOVE the headlights, that are left uncovered. in some states its illegal to have more than 2 sets of lights (headlights, and 1 other set of lights). in ny for example, its illegal to have headlights below a certain measurement(and yes, many nypd officers carry a measuring tape!)
as a side note: i had an officer notice it, and pay a compliment during a traffic stop. he seemed to know a thing or two about them.

am i worried about an officer noticing them? no. not even an bit. i use them the say way i would the highbeams. i would never purposely direct these lights into peoples eyes, as i wouldnt want someone to blind my 60yr old mother while driving. (i do see a-holes using them as if they are DRL's and it ticks me off. but then again, i see a-hole with 15,000k HID headlights too).

put it this way, most MOD's are illegal. some are worth having, some are not. these in my opinion are worth having. they really-really help with night vision on dark desolate roads.
