The 411: A while back a guy I know planned on starting his own business (no big shop or anything like that) doing interior illumination upgrades, wiring conversions for engine swaps, and JDM cluster adaptations. Well he didn't know what to name his business so he held a contest. Long story short, I won it and I chose to upgrade my interior lighting with LEDs...all for free. This weekend we finally got around to getting it done:

Here are some pics in the dark.Light in the trunk: Top up/down, emergency blinkers (also replaced the light for the overdrive button):Light on the top (sorry I forgot what it's called ):Shift gate...I figured I'd spice things up until I got a 5 speed:Cruise control and the switch to open the pop-ups:Gauges:Speedo:Tach:

Note:1) I don't know who made the bulbs. All I know is that the guy got them from Japan . for not getting all the necessary info. Sorry about that.

2) The gauges look really dim. In reality they aren't but they again they aren't super bright either. I may have to get some brighter ones but for now they work. I'm still not too familiar with all this lighting stuff...do you guys recommend me upgrading or keeping the ones I have right now? Also, I can't remember if I can replace the light for the clock...*scratches head

3) Not everything is complete. As you may have noticed, I didn't post pics of the AC switches. I need to first figure out how to remove it. I also need to do the map lights on the rearview mirror and I also have to figure out how to remove the light covers that are just above the rear license plate. There are 4 screws iirc near them but they are rusted really bad. We were having a hard time removing them so I need to find an alternative solution to get them out. I'm going to do a little searching and if I come up with nothing, I would ask kindly that someone help me out.

4) Problems...can't say there were any. Everything was pretty straightforward. The top light kept flickering at first but since then it has stopped.

There were a few other things I had to point out but I forgot what they were. If I remember I'll post it.

Anyways just let me know what you think...I'm open to opinions, suggestions, etc.

nice job so far.

you probably want to take off the whole rear license plate light fixure. i say this because it's a little easier. i just changed my rear bumper because my vert was hit before i bought it and i had a 89 shell. i had to take them off on both to swap them.

there are three larger screws on the whole fixture you need to take out. the light bracket will come out easy then just twist to remove the bulbs.

as you sort of see the big screws were less crappy than the little ones

nice, i need to find the teeny tiny bulbs that go inside the switches for top up/down buttons. if you want to go LED in your gauges, you have to get a different kind of LED that emits the light laterally. typical LED's emit their light directly up, so that's probably why your gauges don't seem too bright. here is where to see what they look like...

scroll down to where it says "Instrument Cluster and Gauge Backlights"

Thanks for the info...I'll try that out when I get the chance.

Hmmm I'm gonna ask him if he has any of those and switch them out next weekend.

Hey, this is Kris from Shocker E-Formance,

The gauge lighting is using the 194-style wide-angle inverted lens LED's. I've tried a few different types of LED's for these, including some of my own design but these seem to offer the most balanced light output. I'm always looking for better/brighter options and have already been through two types of the inverted-lens model lights. I've actually ordered a set from the link listed above to see if they are any different but haven't received them yet.

The only problem with LED's, while offering truer lighting and brighter output, it is more focused as opposed to the ominous output of standard incandescent lamps. The gauge lighting I'd consider equivocal to the output of the standard lighting but with a cooler/pure color to the light.

The switches were all custom made by me which slows things down a bit but I'm working on standardizing the design and possibly having full kits available for purchase once complete. Until then, I take each switch, convert them to the updated lighting, test the output then move to the next unit.

Ryan has a very nice convertible 240, which is a very rare site in Florida! It was nice to work with his as it gave me an opportunity to see some things and possibilities that the coupes, hatches and S14 don't offer.

The site still hasn't launched yet due to delays of various types but it should be up soon with more information on each service and some of the items we'll be offering.

Here are a few examples of some previous works as well:

Lighting upgrades, S14 climate control + center switches

Cluster interpolation and conversions, S14-to-R33 gauge cluster conversion

Lighting upgrades, cluster lights:

sweeeet.

love it.

i'd like to have the time available some day to sweat the small stuff like interior lighting again someday.

however, i'm interested in this dash-gauge-conversion stuff. do you have a website or something that elaborates on this a bit?

Looking good. I must be old fashioned. I still like my regular lightings...

I have tried the mini wedge with the inverted cone shaped tips and I thought they sucked...very low light. If you want to go the way of LED's I would suggest using the high powered type bulbs like the WLED-WHP LED Wedge Base Bulbs or the PCB Lamps with 194 Wedge Base on that website...these give off very intense white light. just my two cents worth.

Yeah I'll switch over to something brighter eventually.

Thanks for comments everyone!
