So i got my LED brake lights in, they look great and are bright since they are 19LED's each and my tailight housing is clear and highly reflective. My problem is that they work when the brake is applied, but you know how at night, if brake is not applied brake lights are supposed to be dim? these arent! I heard that if the light is lit up with engine running the lights are supplied with a greater voltage, but I am sure it wont affect the LED as it is a DIODE and there is one breakover voltage to turn it on, there isnt a dim, and an on. I replaced the original filament bulbs in until i figure something out

I am thinking of maybe having a transistor and resistor circuit inside a waterproof casing connected to the circuit...good idea? any substitutes? I want to do the turn signals, I heard a 6 ohm resistance would work so that they "flash" it makes sense, but the brake light seems alot more complicated as we need 2 different light settings. Any help would be appreciated. This should probably be on an electronics forum, but alot of guys on here have some great electronics background! thanks

They are 1157 right? The reason I ask is that 1156 is just as popular as 1157, but the 1156 is a single filament bulb whereas the 1157 is a dual filament. An LED version of the 1157 incandescent bulb, like you have, should mimick the dual filament giving you two intensities of light. Is it possible it is inserted backwards (highly unlikely this is the problem but wouldnt hurt to try)

A filament is the little wire inside an incandescent bulb (like regular stock bulb) LED bulb doesnt have any filaments! Dual filament bulbs, like the brake lights in a QX4, have 2 wires inside the bulb which emit 2 different types of light, in our case dim and bright. So when you have headlights on its dim, and when you brake, it goes bright. The bulb in our turn signals only have one filament because its either on or its off, nothing else So to make it easy, which part # bulb did you install in the brake light? 1156 or 1157? It should be 1157.

it sounds like he bought a tail lamp replacement assembly, and not simply a drop-in bulb.

it was an 1157 drop in bulb. I have euro tailights that have clear housing but they use the OEM sockets. So the LED is simply a drop in, I know what a filament is i just figured he meant an internal resistance inside the LED....that filament inside a regular bulb is basically a resistor isnt it? Its a coil that heats up and gives the light, but that coil is lighting up due to heat due to resistance so This is what makes our nissans see a bulb is there and why they dont see an LED! so i freakin gotta figure this out cuz i am so into that led look

I got LED bulbs from http://www.superbrightleds.com/ and they work perfect.
