I have a 2008 Black/Chestnut with over 21K miles, almost 2 years old. I have the Elite Leather package, which supposedly has different seat inserts from the base leather that year, but I could never spot the difference. My understanding (others will have to verify) is that the Elite Leather is now the standard kit.
As others have said, the leather still looks new. The only place that shows some wear is the front of the driver's seat under the thigh area. A dullness started there that I was able to restore with Lexol to a like-new condition. I doubt that was a function of the color, though.
I too had a Lexus RX, a 2005 Black/Black, prior to this car. And several cars before that were either black or tan leather, as it sounds like you have experienced. The chestnut definitely looks richer and more elegent than a basic black or tan. And everyone who rides in it for the first time comments very positively on the color, and the two-tone dash. Big wow factor time and again.
I hope you find an exterior color you can live with and get the chestnut. It will be hard for me to go back to a "normal" color after this, it is so nice. Who knows, you may like the style so much you'll start washing the exterior, too!!
PS - I don't know if it the self-healing paint or not, but this is the first black car I have had that doesn't show swirl marks and streaks from hand washing or auto car washing. I am very impressed with the paint finish. I have zero qualms at all about running it through a car wash.
