I've generally stuck with WD, but I've got a Seagate in my HTPC (I'm only referring to platter-based drives, my SSDs are all OCZ or Intel). Thinking about picking up a Mybook as I can grab one pretty cheap (I've got a few reward zone bucks sittign around).

Lou, this might be my netbook upgrade at some point in the future:

I like the WD - it turns off after a while so it doesn't waste power/kill it self spinning, and writes and reads quite well from my own testing (I've actually begun to store VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS folders on them and then encode with handbrake off of it with no lag).

Adam - this IS the netbook I'm going to buy tonight -

I just can't handle a 10in screen...it's so damn small. At least with 12" it have a little bit of eye relief, not to mention a better pixel count.

So WD Mybook it is...

Lou, I'd rather have that power but in a smaller form-factor. Hence my interest in the 1015 over the 1215. And if I ever get it, I'll swap in a 2 gig stick of ram and an SSD. Excellence.

Dave, I know people who swear by WD and hate Seagate as well as people who swear by Seagate and wont touch WD. I don't, however, know anyone who swears by samsung or other less popular manufacturers.

And damnit, you edited before my post went through. Server still seems to be going a touch screwy. I love my 1005. The size is perfect for the mobility it offers. For doing actual work, I would agree that 10" is far too small. I could make it work if need be, but I generally use the lappy when I know I'm going to need it.

Right now, though, the 1005 bogs down when video decoding. The bottleneck is clearly the processor, and it doesn't take much to get it to slow down a touch. I think the 1015 would work perfectly for me, but I can't really justify the cost to replace a netbook that is just over a year old...

Yes you can. You need to try harder.

Another reason I'm going for the 12 is that viewing movies on it will be a lot nicer than the 10. With plane rides and everything having outlets, I'm never too far away from an outlet to use power. And whenever I'm not on power, I'm probably not going to be watching video, so Optimus will turn off the ION and I'll still get like 6 hrs of battery life.

I get your point though.

Lou, I've been spoiled by my tv. I don't like watching movies on anything that small.

And I certainly would be able to justify it, but I've gotta get a few other things first:
1. Replace HD-DVDs with Blu-ray copies (so I can get rid of my HD-DVD player from my tv stand)
2. Replace Sammy Blu-ray player with Oppo BDP-93 (yes, you read that right. The Oppo BDP-83 is no more and will be replaced shortly with the 93. This will help my load times, play more media, upscale better, etc)
3. Upgrade HTPC (need a mATX or ITX board, i5 probably, etc. then I can get rid of my half tower and put the HTPC on the tv stand).

Then I can maybe get the new netbook. Not happening soon as you can see...

-No but it's nice to see you again mister insult.

"D - R - O - W - N ing" is not the same as
"R - O - W- ing"

even though they share letters.

Remember that when you shout for help.

Learn to multitask. During one of your meetings, crap into your coffee. This should warm the coffee up (at least to body temperature) all while taking care of the crap and meeting. Then, once the meeting is complete you will have less on your plate. Simple.

Uh, Nico is still acting weird. Has anyone else noticed posts appearing and then disappearing? Or posts that you can't read? Like, I occasionally don't load the last post in a page. The topics say it is there, but then loading the thread doesn't show the post.

For example, I can't see IBC's post in the "need help asap" thread in GenChat...

Adamn, my guess is IBC posted a reply and then deleted it. That cached it in the post log but removed the content from the thread. I can't see it either.
