TITO!

The early models had 2 major problems were the engine dropping from a faulty read engine mount that got recalled by Mazda, but still isn't a long term fix. The other is smoke coming from the exhaust. I can't remember, or I may not have followed the smoke problem, but the engine drop problem is quickly remedied with a new rear motor mount(RMM).

My choice in motor mount is the TRZ dog gone motor mount I have been drooling over for years. There are 3 different version of fixing it. One is the insert from Corksport. I haven't really heard any complaints from its users. It's a cheap fix($35). I would imagine that it's still flimsy and may not be good for the long run. The next route is AWR RMM. Comes in three strengths: 70, 88, 95 durometers. IIRC, the higher the number, the better strength it has on the motor. This is a waste of time, because it fails just like the stock one. Not as quickly, but it doesn't hold up over time. The TRZ, my favorite comes in 2 strengths: Polyurethane(street) and Delrin(race).

What's important to remember when choosing the different strengths is how much cabin vibrations you'll receive. After about 2 weeks, it should settle down because it needs to break in, but it will increase.

As for engine performance, the turbo and fuel is pretty much at it's potential. If you want anything at 300+HP with a reliable motor you'll have to replace it's whole fuel system and turbo. You can increase it's PSI to the MS6 level since they are the same exact engine and set up, but that's it.

Torque steer is something you will have to correct. FWD vehicles suffer from this. Getting the new RMM, and the new motor mounts that have just hit the public from CP-E.com is suppose to help with it significantly, but no real news on whether it's true or not. They're very expensive and it hasn't been around long enough.

What else do you wanna know?

Oh, well in that case, yeah, very reliable. The new RMM and you should be good to go. What year are you looking at?

Forgot to mention that some will argue that if you do the new RMM, that it will most unindoubtidly(sp?) put new stress on the other motor mounts. No actual facts on it. I haven't seen failures yet. Doesn't mean it wont happen.(I don't think it will)

Some customers may experience white/blue smoke from their exhaust pipes
after prolonged idle periods and/or while driving in traffic at very
slow speeds.

This condition may be the result of the turbo's oil supply not being
able to adequately drain out of the turbo during long idle periods.

Vehicles having this concern should be diagnosed using the following diagnostics procedure.
Repair Procedure

1. Confirm that the proper maintenance intervals have been performed.

2. With the engine at normal operating temperature, allow it to idle
for an extended idle period.

Caution:
Closely monitor the engine coolant to the assure the engine does not Overheat.

3. If smoke from the exhaust is present after the extended idle period,
take before pictures of the smoke, then change the oil and filter
using 5W/40 (synthetic). After the oil change, in order to burn off
the oil that remains in the exhaust system, perform the following:
start the engine, check for oil leaks, then let it idle for 10
minutes, after the 10 minute idle period, increase the RPMs to 3000
for 1 minute, repeat idle test to confirm that no smoke returns.

A: If the smoke returns, contact the Technical Assistance Hotline
(Select option #2 for Major Assembly Authorization) with the oil
change history information, to attain an authorization for a turbo
replacement.

B: If smoke DOES NOT RETURN after the repeat idle test, NO other repairs
are to be performed at this time. Explain to the customer that MAZDA
is currently working on an improved positive crankcase valve (PCV)
system to reduce the engine crankcase pressures to allow the turbo's
oil supply to drain from the turbocharger more efficiently This fix
will be available approximately within 90 days and at that time the
oil will be changed back to 5W-30 and the improved PCV system will be
installed

They will prob be sticklers asking for receipts of oil changes, but otherwise this confirms 3 good things.

1. Mazda probably redesigned the turbo around 2/08 and modified the oil lines.
2. New PCV system being designed to help.
3. The smoke should be mostly harmless.

hanging onto a few receipts for a little while is not a deterrent for me. sounds like a non major issue to me that can be dealt with fairly easily, if at all.

Welp, I painted my zinc coated washers black in hopes that it would stick. It came off the moment I tightened the nut down. :(
