Then I put a capacitor on that wire, then the light turns on as the door opens, then fades away after I close the door...

There's no power on the door switch wire, that's just a signal wire to detect whether it grounds or not. You'll have to go to the light for your feet for that.

To keep it on when you put the key in? The capacitor type is decided by how long you want to keep the light on and how much of a delay you want to have it come on in the first place. You need diodes to makes sure the voltage doesn't ground into the other circuit when it is off.
