Hey. I was browsing the forum late Friday evening and I saw a topic that I haven't done to my car yet...Throttle Body Cleaning. I read up on it and decided that I would do it early Saturday morning before I start my day. Bolt after bolt, I finally got the air duct off my Y33. Since I have a K&N air filter, I decided to clean that since I already had everything broken down. After cleaning the throttle body and noticing the "black gunk" flow out, I waited about 30 mins and put everything back in place. The car started kind of rough at first with smoke coming out the tailpipe, but after a minute, my baby started to run just like new again.

The only thing that I noticed with the cleaning was that my acceleration was a little quicker and..... a bright yellow "Service Engine Soon" light. I was pissed. My car drives and ride just as well or maybe better than most newer car so why is this light on!? Took it to the Autozone and was told that the air sensor might be bad. I told him that can't be true because I didn't have promblems previously and left thinking that the sensor just needs time to dry out.

Once I returned back home, I called one of my friends who also have a luxury foreign car and told him about the situation. I told him that I needed that damn light off because it was getting on my nerves. This is where I learned something new, he told me that I can reset the the code myself so if the light comes back on, then I will now for sure that it is the sensor. I didn't know that if you take the positive cable off the battery and get in your car and hold down the brake for 50 sec., it would click and reset the code Of course the light didn't come back on but did anyone else on here know that??

Yeah, I just take the positive cable off and then touch it to the negative. What it does is drain the capacitors inside the ECU and it clears the memory. I haven't tried the brake pedal push method though. Hmmm

A great testament for why not to abuse one's car with a K&N filter.

So are you saying that K&N air filters are not good? The car came with one when I purchased it. If it isn't good, then why? Since the throttle body haven't been clean, probably since the car was manufactured, I would think that it would have a build-up of deposits over the years regardless of what air filter you use. If there is a better air filter, please let me know

Most Q owners don't like the K&N. The biggest problem is properly cleaning the K&N. If you don't let it dry out enough, you get oily deposits on your MAF and other sensitive intake areas. There's serious doubt that it offers any improvement in rwhp. It does make a nice sound, if that's your goal.

There are a few posters who use the K&N and feel it offers an improvement.

Oh ok. I understand. Since the car came with one, I thought it would be more cost efficient to just use the recharge kit instead of buying a new one multiple times throughtout the year. Which air filter does most of the members use on here? I might change up.

Use the Nissan air filter. I've tried aftermarket, and they suck, not because of the filter paper, but because of imperfect sealing which allows large dust particles to come through.

Also, the Nissan filter is sometimes CHEAPER than aftermarket!

Thanks! I will go by the nissan dealer and see how much it is. If people think it is better to go with than instead of the K & N, then I'm for it.
