I need help troubleshooting an oil leak. I have an oil leak that is dripping somewhere between the transmission and the rear of the engine. I'm 99% sure it is not coming from the engine head because every time I check I do not see any evidence of oil leaking there. It only leaks when the engine is running hard. It might leak a few drops after I park it but not always. I had it parked for a few months and it did leave a light oil colored area the size of an orange in the concrete. The engine was rebuilt and after the rebuild it has always done this. The first thing I did was pulled the transmission and pushed the rear main seal in like 10-20 thousandths all around to see if I could get it to seal up. That did not make a difference. so that next thing I did was to pull the oil pan and replace the rear main seal and then resealed the oil pan. For the oil pan I used two new rubber felpro gaskets and used the factory orange RTV stuff all the way around. It is still leaking and I'm quite annoyed because the tracks won't let me run with even a tiny oil leak. When I changed the rear main seal I did not see any burrs or imperfections on the surface of the crankshaft or the seal housing.

Any advice? Thank you.

I don't know what your problem is, but I had something like this and it was the oil pan. That thing can be a real PITA to seal.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, the design of the CA's oil pan makes it a nuissance when re-installing it. It requires a few extra steps for insurance because of the (IMHO) design flaw, which may not be a flaw at all in Nissan's eyes. Unless your rear main seal was faulty or was installed incorrectly, your oil pan is the real issue and since I never take pictures of how I apply silicone to the lip of the oil pan, it will be hard to give you an example. just make sure you use the grey silicone as it seems to be better suited for import applications.

Yeah like Dee stated^^ Nissan only used the orange high temp sealant on the camshaft covers. So try removing the orange and redoing it with the grey sealant. It say maximum oil resistance i believe. What about the oil pan seal that sits under the rear main? You might try replacing that, as with age it might have started to crack some. The oil pan has grooves on the side sealing surfaces. Nissan reccomends filling those grooves graciously then trailing some inbetween the grooves. Then light sealant spread the oil pan seals. Best wishes.

I actually currently have the same issue with my Engine, and it seems to be coming from the rear side of the engine, underneath the Oil filter around the oil pan. However the drip is VERY slow, just haven't got the energy to get it fixed.

How's your PCV system hooked up? Got a pressurized crankcase maybe?

As for sealing the oilpan; the Right Stuff by Permatex works real good for me. It's got a bit more "give" than grey RTV so it copes with vibrations and deflection of the mating surfaces better than stiffer grey RTV. Or so I've been told.

As others have said, it's likely to be the oil pan. Don't use the orange stuff to seal the pan. I've never had luck with it sealing. I use only black/grey PERMATEX. I don't use any other brand for the oil pan. It's the only thing that I've gotten to seal every time. I think I get the same stuff that Buddyworm is talking about. It says is specifically for oil pans.
