Leaking new cam seal (spontaneously playful camshaft?!?)

I took my '91 300ZX TT in for its 120k timing belt service over the summer. Prior, there was a little oil seeping from the timing belt cover around the CAS, not enough to drip, but visible. When the car was returned from the dealership, the oil leak was far worse. I was getting puddles of oil on my garage floor (completely dry before). The dealership is claiming that perhaps I have "excessive play in my camshaft" or something wrong with the cam sprocket so their seal work is not warranted. They'll need to do a complete engine teardown to solve anything.

Is it possible that the seal just didn't seat properly or was defective, nicked during installation, etc.? Logic would tell me that a camshaft doesn't spontaneously get "more playful" (more bent?!?) during a 120k service.

Any experience with this type of issue (replaced cam seal leaking) and/or advice for whether "a complete teardown" is called for, as the dealer suggests?

Thanks!

Sounds like they did a poor job. That end of the cam is not going to wobble or have much play in it. They probably incorrectly installed it.

How did you find a dealership to work on it? Most around here won't touch them.

Yeah, that's a load of crap.

Sounds like an improper installation of the seal.

Thanks, both, for the feedback. I pressed on the dealer and they've agreed to warrant the parts install and give another go at it. The local dealer has a "Z guy" who has purportedly been working on them for years, but I've seen far greater insight here than there. If I had the time (and money!) I'd just do what this forum recommends for a living. :mike

This was solved with BDE VTC sprockets from ConceptZ and the issue is described well here --> https://conceptzperformance.com/bde-vtc ... p_3704.php
