Hi all,

First post here! Been using the forum and finding pretty much everything i need using the search, but recently ran into an issue that I want to run by you all.

My 2008 S got a P0456 (small evap leak) several months ago that turned into a P0455 (gross evap leak). Figured it was the canister or gas cap or something. Last time I filled up the tank, more gas went in that usual. When the pump finally shut off, I noticed there was gas pouring out from the top of the tank. I am assuming that I have something going on with the pump seal or the evap hose on top of the tank and just wanted to get some thoughts before I drop the tank. Anything else I should do while the tank is off? It has 180k miles and I really dont know too much of the history of the car and I have had it a year.

Thanks,
Jamie

Be as careful as you can while removing the lower fuel filler hose. It is likely to be not has yielding as when it was new and now prone to cracking when it is flexed a bit while taking it off. The screws that mount the tank shield and straps are very likely rusted. Use some PB Blaster penetrating catalyst and let it soak for hours, respraying a couple more times during the wait, to dissolve that rust and minimize the risk of breaking the screws off.

There are several things worth taking the time to inspect and test once you have the tank removed. The FSM pages EC-404 to EC-409 has a good run down of the things to take a look at. https://www.nicoclub.com/service-manual ... 008/ec.pdf

Update:

Dropped the tank today. Not as bad as I thought, but I was not the first. All bolts came off easy with a impact wrench. Gas fill line came off easy as well.

So as I was lowering the tank to get to the connections on the fuel pump, the fuel pump stayed in place while the tank kept lowering. Obviously whoever replaced the pump before I got the truck didnt tighten the ring enough and it slowly loosened over time.

So I cleaned everything up, the gasket was still good, and tightened the ring all the way. I didnt use a drift, I used channel locks and kept slowly tightening each section until it locked into place.

Put the tank back in and cleared the codes. We will see if the codes come back.

Appreciate the assist and knowledge!
