Hey guys,

I have been having this issue for a while and can't seem to figure it out. The car runs and drives fine around town, smooth, plenty of power. The issue comes about when cruising on the highway for extended time, lets say 30 minutes or more. The top end develops a gnarly tap and it feels like i lost a chunk of power. Fuel and ignition systems are tip top and i'm wondering if it is possible one of the hydro lifters give way after some driving.

Things to note:
-It doesn't happen to often in colder weather, warm weather seems to bring it out faster
-Running 15w40 with diesel additives almost eliminates the issue until the oil is worn
-once cooled, the issue is gone

More questions:
-If it is a hydro lifter, any way i can tell which one it is being its an issue that happens under certain conditions?
-Is there a source for just the hydro lifter without the rocker arm?

Thanks!

Quick update from my phone.

I noticed its weeping and bubbling oil from the hg just to the right of the #4 spark plug. The lifters all feel good while checking them out on the car.

I retorqued the head and rocker rails and searching for a btp to m14 adapter so I can install a VDO oil pressure sender and hook up a 5 bar gauge from one of my Volvo.

I'm am very very hesitantly considering bardhal stop smoke and stop leak stuff.

Ideally I'd love to toss on a rebuilt head. But well see.

Mobile update 2:

Installed oil pressure gauge and sealed up the valve cover.

My car idles at about 1100 rpms at idle.

Cold: 4 bar
Warm: 3.25 bar
3000 rpm: 4.5 bar
In gear warm: 2.5 bar

Here is a video of the hg leak:

I haven't tried the stop leak.

Does not seem any one is interested in my thread but as a dedicated OP I'll keep it updated :)

That's a good one. Have you tried checking compression after the problem starts to show?

I'm never in a position to check it when it happens. I just gave the car a real good look over and I think its worth getting a reman head. Its a solid car and has taken me up and down the east coast.

Just a thought, you may also want to check the timing chain and guides. If the wore out the chain can smack the cover and a faulty chain tensioner
could explain the sudden loss of power

There in great shape. I did the chain and guides at 110k and now at 119k.
