Rust. It is the bane of our existence. A dream killer. The difference between a sweet deal and a parts car.
If you've ever bought an antique car, or a newer one from the upper NE, it's the first thing you look for above mileage, motor condition, or if it even has an interior.
Seller: "It runs and drives."
Serious buyer: "I DON'T CARE. LET ME SEE THE FLOOR PAN, THE BATTERY TRAY, THE GAS DOOR, AND THE DOOR SILLS."

I saw this video the other day and I would love to try one of these out on some questionable panels we have in storage. This could be a real game changer for the restoration biz. Now, who's going to buy one so I can borrow it? ;)

Laser Rust Removal. There is a video in the link.

Very cool. I'm curious how expensive it is.

It's funny. I've been researching that part. Lots of ads, no pricing except for the big units used in the industrial side of things / used with robots. That can't be a good sign.

According to the comments, the CL 500 costs around $275,000 ot $7,500 weekly.

The one in thr video is the CL 1000, so I'm gonna assume it's priced much higher.

You can buy a lot of rust-free parts for $275,000

Easily accessible surface rust (like the stuff in the video) has never really been an issue. You could tackle that with a wire brush or sand blaster... its the stuff that you can't reach (like inside a rocker panel), or rust that has already turned into rot that is a problem.

That probably explains why it took effort to find the price.

Wow looks cool but seems too expensive for just removing surface rust.

Might work for things that are too delicate to handle pressure while rubbing the rust.

I'm guessing that they are probably used for high volume parts where low clean up is a requirement or something along those lines.

I wonder if you are able to adjust the "abrasiveness" of the laser. It would be pretty neat to be able to adjust surface profile on the fly without switching back and forth different types of sandblasting media. Probably ends up being cheaper in the long run.

The big benefit of the CL series over traditional media blasting is two fold. There's no mess such as media being blasted everywhere, and there's no harmful emissions (according to their website). Literally no muss no fuss. It's a neat tool, but for the cost it's absolutely absurd. I forget the price I saw quoted for the 1 kW laser, but it was upwards of half a million.
