Ok, people do this at your own risk, and I'm not sure if anyone knew about this but I work at a Quick Lube and have plenty of time to go through oil filters and cross reference them.

I'm using fram numbers because they are available anywhere.

SR20DET = PH4386KA24DE = PH3682

Those are the orginal oil filter sizes. One filter that is slightly larger then the one for the KA and is a whole lot larger then the one for the SR is the

PH2870A

Which is for this following vehicle.

2000 Volkswagen Passat1.8L Fuel Injected DOHC AEB Turbo

I included the car's make model and engine info so you can find the oil filter of your choice, just look up that car for whatever brand of filter you need. My friends SR20DET is running on Mobil oil filter using the one for the Passat has not had any leaks what so ever and oil filter is still tight. He has a Blacktop S13 SR by the way, I'm sure this oil filter will work for all other SR20's and KA24's. Looking through the forums, I've seen quite a few questions about oil filters so I decided to put this up to see if anyone is interested. Some reasons why you would want a larger filter is that it has more capacity, meaning it can hold more dirt before it starts using the bypass valve which will just circulate dirty oil back into the engine, another is less restriction in the circulation of the oil which in turns provides more oil for lubrication.

bigger filter means a slight more oil capacity in the engine too. Interesting.

Yep, it should fit the SOHC too, seems to be of the same oil filter as the DOHC.

How exactly does the filter work for both SR's and KA's when the KA and SR filter are not the same.

The SR uses respective year Sentra filters (USDM SR20DE's).

Interesting...I work for a VW/Audi shop and have dozens of these in stock. I'll probably verify fitment at my next oil change. Bosch, Mahle, and Mann are all quality German filters and that application should be able to add another .5qts to oil capacity.

But then again, I'll probably be running an oil cooler on my next motor, so I may just set up a remote filter, increasing my options and capacity even more.

Thread & gasket size are the same. I believe the SR guys can't use a KA filter out of the box because it hits something near the oil filter block location. KA guys can use the sr filter if they want w/o issue.

I currently run a greddy sr oil filter relocator kit on my KA - I can run sr/ka (as well as rb) oil filter w/o issue.

Really, I was told by Greddy that their relocation kit only worked with the AE86 filter. Interesting.

Really, don't have a super detailed pic, but see the blue oem ka filter sitting on the passenger side? that's connected to the sr oil filter relocation kit - I may have posted a better picture a long time ago when this was brought up originally.
