Lane Departure Warning (LDW) not working due to Windshield??

The LDW on my recently purchased 06 M45 was not working...took it to dealer and they said the cause was due to a non-factory windshield being installed.

Anyone heard of this? I can see if it was really poor quality/hazy glass but it looks good visually. Is there something special required by the LDW system? Any Nissan/Infiniti techs on here?

I've never herd of such a thing. What does your windshield have to do with the LDW? I have the same problem you do, LDW not working and since I bought mine from the same place you did, I very curious on what you find out.

Please keep me posted on your findings.

LOL !!!!!!! Are you kidding me...? I'd go and slap the dealer in the face...the LDW is located in the bottom of the front bumper...at least that's where it's been on my last 2 Infinitis...I do not have it on my 08 as I never used it anyway and didn't want the box "hole" in my front lower grill...

The sensor for this system is near the grille ... I seriously doubt that the windshield has anything to do with LDW problems.

You could download our Service Manual from here (link is in my sig), print out the page(s) on the LDW system and ask the dealer to show you just exactly where on it that it says that the windshield has anything to do with its operation.

The LDW unit is located inside the windshield and it looks out through it. If you look up by the rear view mirror from the outside you can see what looks like a camera lens. That is it. If it is obstructed up there by an aftermarket windshield it could do that. There is nothing on the bumber pertaining to that.

Okay, I stand corrected. I confused the LDW with the ACC sensor!

There is indeed a camera mounted near the top that needs a clear view of the front to do its thing! This is described in the 2008 M Owner's Manual on page 5-14. It is it obstructed, then the system will not work. Page 5-20 shows the area of the windshield that has to be unobstructed for this!

Thanks for the correction and welcome to NICO!

It's possible that you were given a windshield without the LDW window. It's up near the mirror, and perhaps your new windshield is blacked out in that area. Viewing the car from the outside, look for something that looks like a camera lens mounted near your rear view mirror.

If you can see the camera, then it's just your typical Infiniti dealer BS. Welcome to the world of half priced luxury car...

You mean you didn't disable this the first day you bought the car like me ? It's easily the most annoying feature I've ever seen...

So here's the deal. As some of you mentioned...the LDW camera is in fact at the top of the windshield, behind the rear view mirror. The factory windshield has a gap in the blue tint at the top of the windshield for the camera to see through. It appears someone replaced the windshield on mine with an aftermarket version...thus no gap in tint...thus camera can't see the road.

As exbmwdude pointed out...this appears to be a rather annoying feature so I opted to not swap out the windshield at my cost to solve the problem. Cost of new winsdhield....are you sitting down....$1,700 installed

Thanks all for your help.

Not sure how it works where you are but in Florida there is a law that requires your insurance company to replace a cracked windshield at no charge if you have full coverage. You could perhaps hit a rock and crack it and then demand an Infiniti one that the system will work with. You didn't hear it from me though.

I've had a windshield replaced using my insurance coverage, but I had to pay the deductable of 50 dollars. I cracked it myself trying to replace the rearview mirrow.

Not sure if it really makes a difference. But when I had my windshield replaced (2006 M35) due to a stone chip the windshield was noted as being for the lane departure option. New windshield was over $900.00. Maybe you should contact an after market glass repair facility and see if the windshield has a special treatment near the area where the camera is located in the car.

I would imagine that this would have an impact on your intelligent cruise control as well (distance control) if you have this feature.

Nope, the automatic cruise control feature is in the bottom of the front bumper and (from what I heard) uses a laser to gauge the distance to the car in front of you. The LDW uses a camera type device and in by the rear view mirror at the top of the windshield.

I agree, that thing is annoying... and if you got the wrong winshield the LDW will def not work.

Kudos and Welcome new guy, :bigthumb:
It's about time someone get some of this information right.

It's not like anyone ever wrote this down...say in a book or something.

LDW is pretty lame, but it works. In newer cars its integrated into the Safety Shield system and actually has more ability to interact with the vehicle. If it is leaving the lane with the turn signal off it will mildly engage the opposite side brakes to guide you to the middle. It is called LDP (Lane Departure Prevention) now.

If you use a turn signal when changing lanes (unlike your average bmw owner) the system would not work.

Yep, and they wasted their one and only "first post" to give some completely wrong info about the ACC being in the windshield.

Edit: I see you edited your post as i was typing my response. We seem to be on the same page

even though this is a little off topic...

is there a way to increase the sound of the LDW beep? If i am listening to music and have the LDW on i cannot even hear it, and there is no notification on the HUD showing it either.

What year are you driving that has a HUD? In the 06, there is a light on the dash that lights up when the sound is going. Unfortunately, I haven't heard of any way to adjust the volume...

There is a button on to the right of the steering column. Mine is off by default...

Like I mentioned in your other post, you can set it to default off by holding the button down.
It was either 5+ or 10+ seconds, but from what I remember, there will be a beep to let you know that it switched the default setting.
