lagging while driving, than cut-off

i was driving my 1990 240...all of a sudden i started to get a lot of lag...was lagging more and more until i stopped at a red light and cut-off...it would start back up but once i give it gas, it would cut right back off...what caused this? the guy that helped me push it off the street said he thinks it was the fuel filter...so i bought a 300zx oem filter (mine as well) now im cant even get it started at all...what is wrong??? vac leak? rotor/cap? fuel pump? fuel filter? what happened?
