Gday all.

We're currently messing around with a CA18DET in a 4x4 for mud racing, and its lacking power under load.

Fixing other issues we have replaced the plugs and coils, and rebuilt the turbo, and the computer isnt giving any fault codes.

On a looser road surface it will spin and rev out without a problem, but under more load on sealed roads it generally lacks power on WOT.

Its not misfiring or breaking down at all.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

any idea what your A/F is?

what aftermarket parts do you have on it?

is it across the power band or pre-boost?

No idea on the A/F sorry.

Very little aftermarket work done on it. Its got a pod filter and a small intercooler, and minor exhaust changes, but computer and turbo are standard, and as far as i know fairly much everything else is too.

The problem is while its on boost. Ive only been for a fairly short drive in it, but it seemed to start pulling well once the turbo spooled up, then would have quite a flat spot, but higher in the revs it would often start pulling better again...

sounds like might be hitting that 5500rpms flat spot. mine smoothed out when I added a boost controller inline.

What type of intake pipe are you using?

5500rpm flat spot eh... So thats fairly common by the sounds of it. No idea on the RPM's, but i think it would be around there, but this flat spot just seems to keep on going.

Had another spin yesterday and it seems to be surging a bit, rather than just a complete dull patch.

The intake pipe is just a braided rubber hose. Is steel tubing better for flow?

If you're not getting codes, we need more info. Boost pressure, AFR, something.

Is it possible the timing jumped?

Sorry im a bit brief on the details, but we've only just bought the thing, and as far as i know and can tell it is pretty much standard everything.

There is a every chance someone has been screwing with the timing, so i'll ask the boys if they have, and check it one night this week anyway just to make sure.

Also going to replace the fuel filter, then thats about all we're going to have time to do.

Thanks all for your help, and hopefully we can do alright with it in our first race on the weekend.

Cheers.
