stock for stock, the 18 is rated at an extra 5 hp, but it also lacks a little torque due to smaller displacement.

how much power are you looking for?

That would be due to the different method of rating hp that was used in the U.S. starting in 1979. L20B's were rated at 115(SAE) which changed to 100 (DIN) in 1979. Same engine. You'll notice that the hp ratings of Datsun engines all dropped in 1979. I.E.: 1978 L24E-154, 1979 L24E-120. Same engine.

A V8engine is not a bad motor, but its gasoline consumption makes it prohibitive, specially if modified.

My 610 is getting a 5 speed gear box ( to replace the stock automatic ) . The engine was in perfect shape, so I am adding a 38DGES Weber ( later on I will add twin DCOEs) headers, and a cam.

That should make a fun to drive fast and reliable Datsun.

If I had to choose from 2 engines sitting on the floor, both in the same stage , I would go for the L20B, because it has more torque , in city driving, that torque feels great. If you have an L18 already, in that case, just keep it, modify it to suit your driving preferences, and enjoy it.

L18s rev higher , that is the plus, but unless I was looking for a high RPM race car, I take torque over RPM, specially when talking about two similar engines, RPM being not a dramatic difference.

Don't know. I don't follow that sort of thing with the newer cars.

fair enough.

they're all plastic boxes anyway.

I miss cars with a soul to them....Toyota hasn't had one in a long time.
