I just put all new AGX struts on my 1990 hatch and I now have a gnarly shaking in my steering wheel around 45 to 50 miles per hour and it becomes less and less the faster I go. I took the front wheels off and checked that everything was tight and it was. I am at a loss. If I can't figure it out by Tuesday, it's going to the shop... please help.

not yet. I put lowering springs on about 7-8 months ago without a re-balance or an allignment and it was fine. do you think I just got lucky?

Yep, lucky. Pretty much all suspension work will need some kind of alignment and balancing.

On another note, I put on my AGXs and they work great with only little alignment problems.

Good luck man

cool thanks.I got the shaking figured now I have another question. Is it ok to use lowering springs with those AGX struts, because I did and the progressive coil part of the springs are completely compressed and touching each other even when the car is just sitting. Is that normal?

How did you get it 'figured now' beacause I'm having the same issues.

I had my wheels balanced on a hunter... some of the shaking that was pretty brutal went away, but I'm still having issues, including the steering being 'shaky'.

At first when I installed it, it kicked ***, everything was aligned, balanced, properly setup and mounted.

Been almost a year and now... this is what it is.

The way I 'fixed it' was increase dampening level, but now it's at 4/4 front and 8/8 rear... I think the shocks are on their way out but meh... what was your solution?

BTW crazy lowering springs - no no, but S-tech is a known combination (thats what im running).

I work at a tire shop and must have ride matched all my tires about 4 times in a desperate effort to cure my vibration problems. I had been having high way speed vibration issues for about 6 months now and they never seem to get better no matter how smooth my gs-d3s roll. Well I had the suspension components checked out and turned out to be bad struts.

I had no idea the struts were bad because my car still handled pretty good, but I guess having good tires and sway bars help mask some of the characteristics of bad struts. I obviously have forgotten how the car felt like with good struts. I should of figured they were bad because they have been on for about 75k.

Are you running any spacers? That was my problem, I have R32 front brakes and I was running 1/4 inch of spacing on the front so that the stock S13 wheels would clear the calipers and for some reason after I put the AGX's on, the wheels wouldnt seat on the middle of the hub all the way. I fixed the problem with longer studs and the correct spacers.

Well, my car was perfectly FINE, when I first installed all my components, got everything balanced, aligned, etc...

It was so frickin stable and confidence inspiring.. i can not explain it... cruising at 180km/hr felt SLOW and like cruising 80km/hr in other cars... and i mean not just in the straights on the highway but on the big curvy bends, that was a year ago... the steering wheel was so tight, so not bouncy, no bump steer at all, nothing, just confidence inspiring grip, etc...

For sure things that are not okay currently on mine are tie rods. I inspected the whiteline bushings that are installed and they seem solid as ever. The shocks like i explained.. i had to turn up the dampening as things got really soft, bouncier but so noticeably, it was always bouncy just the way the shock spring combo is i guess, and most worryingly enough the steering wheel was going VERY loose/ on it's own if i let the steering wheel go, going left/right bouncing back left/right, left/right scary lol... this was when going in a straight line... once the dampening went up, it made things really tight again, it wasn't so loose... but now its getting looser/softer on me again (gay).

Bah... i wish i got megan racing track coilovers at the time, would have been 400 bux more and would have been done with it.. now i cant rebuild these craps...

By the way I also have good year eagle f1 gs-d3 tires.. what a coincidence. I've been considering other options but im just not sure.

Random owners made some complaints about the gs-d3 tires... like how they don't track proprely, start getting noisy after getting to a certain point, etc...

The advan tires that everyone praises on the other hand I've read on bmw forums stating they are inferior to the gs-d3... so i won't bother with those, they are heavier tires they say and its 'noticable' according to them.

I was considering RT615, but can't seem to find more hardcore info other than most import tuners use them and boast about them that's not exactly awe inspiring. Kumho MX, same story. Rarely do I hear of an exotic, supercar, euro-tuner, etc... using them. Mostly seems to be in drifting circles too (woopie do?).

I considered bridgestone potenza RE-01R as well... pilot sports 2... dunno

Most of those tires have inferior wet grip (i dont care), all around same dry (i guess?) and better tracking, better steering feedback/response... Sorry to go off topic.. but i think our tires also have something to do with why the steering is the way it is

hey, sorry to go off topic but were you still looking for 4 lug front hubs? Email me at [email protected] if you are. I have two pairs, one with longer studs but its missing one stud and a stock set.
