Hi again. We have a 91 s13 with kyb gr2 shocks and stock springs. Wanted a little lower so read through the forums here and decided to go with tein lowering springs. After finding out about the kts coilovers group buy $999 shipped, changed mind and decided to go that route. I know I'm a noob and this car is mainly used for dd but we race motocross for 5 years now so we think suspension is higher priority than motor is. Also the ability to fine tune is kuul if I take the time to read/learn. Anyway my question is are the 8/6 springs ok for street? There's a possibility to get 7/5 springs instead. Or should I just not worry about it? In outdoor mx our best suspension tuning was with the plushest setup that didn't bottom,as proved by lap timers. We'd run with softer compression and tighten up rebound for each track. Supercross settings are firmer both compression and rebound but I hope I don't jump any triples in the 240. At least not on purpose. After all some of these CA roads are like mx tracks so maybe some of these principles crossover.

Yeah you should be fine with 8/6. If its too stiff you can always set the dampers a little softer.8/6 is perfectly fine for me but we most likely have differnt driving styles

I've got kts. 8/6 is fine for the street, but I would probably prefer 7/5. They have 15 way adjustable dampers, which go anywhere from being slightly underdamped for the springs to being rock hard. As far as adjusting compression and rebound separately, that's unfortunately not possible. They are adjusted in unison with the single knob, as are most <1500 coilover setups.

As far as the group buy, that is a very good price, but I would be sure to make sure that the company offering them is still offereing warranties and rebuild policies. http://www.splparts.com warranties kts for a year, and after that, if you blow them you can buy 4 new shocks for about half the price of the entire setup.

Hey thanks for the info. I'll check into the warranty stuff and I obviously didn't research enuf into the compression and rebound adjustments. I still like the kts though especially since i can't afford much more.

Yeah they are great coilovers. I have no complaints. Definately best for the money from what I have heard. You just want to make sure they are well backed. I wouldn't want to be stuck with some co's that I couldn't rebuild.

You can't compare motorcycle suspension with automotive suspension. You have a much more complex situation in a car, and even between one car to the next you will find two good sized variations in valving optimization.

I would suggest reading up on it and forgetting what works on a motorcycle.

It's all opinion. Softer is more comfortable, but stiffer yields better response. I am on 8/6, but would prefer 7/5 for daily.

Kuah is the man behind SPL parts. You obviously have never delt with spl.

Had a chat with SPL guy(must have been Kuah) and asked about 7/5 rate coilovers. He said I'll have to buy a brand new set of 7/5 rate springs and swap them myself. Coilovers still come with 6/8, and SPL won't replace springs for you. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

He also mentioned that 6/8 is not that bad for daily driver. I'm getting KTS coilovers in a couple of months and I won't buy a set of 7/5 springs($100+). I'll definitely buy directly from SPL. Can't wait or take risk...

Yeah I am running kts. 8/6 spring rates. Obviously, they are MUCH stiffer than stock, considering that stock rates are 2/2. They only feel too stiff when driving over really bumpy roads. Highways are very smooth, and on any other decent well maintained roads, you won't really feel much of a difference untill you start cornering hard (at this point you will notice the huge decrease in body roll). They aren't bad on the street, you just have to go slower over rough roads. Never had a girl complain either, so they can't be that bad.

As far as you mentioning ride height:

Ride height has nothing to do with ride quality when you are on coilovers. The shocks maintain full travel, no matter how much you lower with them, unless you start drooping the springs(only neccesary if you want to start tucking tire in the rear). My car is just as comfortable at this height as it was when it was 2 inches higher with the kts.

Hope this helps.

I wish SPL had a group buy or even a sale. I would buy one in a heart beat. I'm holding back now for several reasons.

Everybody just tells me that megans have pretty crappy damping compared to kts. Never driven in a car with them personally.

I also haven't heard of a rebuild policy for them. If you blow your kts, it's 550 for ALL NEW dampers. Best deal around.
