I attempted to install the Koyo rad that was supplied with the car when I purchased it today, and got stuck all over the place. We'll start with the basics:

The FSM poorly describes how to drain the coolant, bare with my terrible noobness please! Just for clarification, this bolt circled below needs to be released as the "water drain plug" correct?

I located the drain plug on the bottom, and the air relief plug. I'm just curious if that is the bolt that needs to be pulled. Anyway on with the show.

This is the Koyo rad that I receieved:

As you can plainly see - it's an F lot bigger than the stock calsonic rad:

Has anyone had trouble with fitment issues or has heard of any? It seems as though I will need to replace the unknown brand of upper rad hose to actually accomodate the fitting on the Koyo. I'm not 100% sure on this.

Main questions : What kinds of problems, modifications, precautions should I be taking when installing the rad? I know it sounds like a real easy job, but the application is proving difficult.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

just take the rubber parts off your old radiator and slap it on the new koyo. It's thicker, you might have to trim a little on your radiator hoses. The upper radiator hose in your picture looks like it's got some weird pinch in it. I'd replace that. Move the cold pipe and that should be enough clearance to get the radiator in without causing damage to the little fins on the radiator.

Is it really necessary to drain the coolant in the engine? Or can it all be done via the rad drain?

Is that the block plug that I've circled above there in that picture? The area it's in makes it very hard for me to drain becuase of all the belts and rubber fittings in the way, I don't want the coolant to start eating away at my stuff.

no it is not necessary to drain the coolant in the engine. pull your lower radiator hose off and drain it into a bucket. make sure your ride is not hot.
