did you use a heat gun to soften the butyl seals? or if you got them used, did you get new seals for the taillights?

Hey 180fan...THEY WERE used .. I got some permatex black silicone and just layered it around the panels where the taillights fit.. Once I layered I immediately put the taillight because directions say the silicone hardens in 15-20 minutes..so I wanted to get a secure bond.. Why the heat gun , did I do it all wrong??

oh if they're new they come with some butyl seals. Those seals are kinda hard when you get em and need to be softened up to get mashed in there better hence the better seal. That's the use for the heat gun. The permatex black stuff, isn't that stuff for windows? Dunno how well that stuff'll seal the tail lights if you didn't put it everywhere but that might be a cause of it. That the stuff wasn't everywhere when the lights were installed. The stuff I used when redoing my tail lights (because of a water leak) was the black tacky stuff by 3M. It came in a box of alot of strips, kinda feels like tar but remains soft pretty much for its lifetime allowing for removal of tail lights and whatever else.

Permatex silicone is for windows, dont waster your time with that, they will leak. Yes get Buthyl from your local auto parts store, you can get a small roll and should be enough for both headlights. Clean area, lay buthyl around the area touching the taillights, heat it up, install tailights, you are done. Go out into the night and enjoy your new taillights......

I applied it to the taillight assembly itself, you can see a grooved portion where the sealant is supposed to go.

Yeah I used the 3M sealant right on the back of the tail lights. Just slap it on there, press it down and apply liberal amounts. lol no leaks anymore that's for sure!

I don't have a heat gun, so if I applied it in the house and used a hair dryer on hi .. Would I be able to get a good secure bond by doing this then , running out to put on the car??

You just have to splice the connectors from your old lights onto the new ones. Colors should match up.

the colors didn't match in my car, all you need to do is take a test light and have someone push your brakes/turn on your lights and figure out which is which. It's not that hard for the mildly retarded.
