haha... another hobby of mine is salt water reef aquariums, so I have a very robust 6 stage RO/DI (reverse osmosis deionization) filter installed in my house. I have this water available to me for free, at this point.
The benefit is that it doesnt leave any water spots when it dries, because the water is pure.
You know the Mr. Clean car wash kit? The adapter you place on your hose, and the cartridges you have to replace... those cartridges are actually deionization resins, and essentially to do the same thing. Theyre far more impractical, however, because those systems lack the prefilter (3 of them) and the actual reverse-osmosis filter that removes some 90-98% of dissolved solids in water BEFORE it reaches the DI stage (which is incredibly aggressive and effective at removing solids from water, but can be expelled/used up very quickly if used on regular tap water).
You're right, though; if I had to actually pay for it, it would have been a little wasteful, being as im trying to save money (for wheels!!)
