So, Kobalt hand tools...crap or decent tools?

From what I can tell, Kobalt tools are made by Danaher, but other than that I have no idea. Any personal experience with these tools?

Edit: Unless I stop eating, I can't afford Mac or Snap-On. ;)

I think that Kobalt is Snap-ons lower brand. I have a few Kobalt tools in my garage and they work as well as Craftsman.

don't think I've heard of them...

you can usually get a good idea by the look of them though, the machine markings and finish and what not.

buy some sockets and use them on the tightest bolts you can find, if they break, check the warranty on them and what not.

Inform a brother.

I have a few Kobalt sockets and I've only had one problem so far, which was a mislabled 10mm socket that was actually a 9mm. However, since I think I only have 2 or 3 kobalt sockets, thats not that great of a success rate ;) When it comes down to it, I always prefer my craftsman stuff.

I've heard that too, but then I heard Danaher makes 'em and not Snap-On. It's really difficult to tell for sure. The Danaher website makes no mention of Kobalt.

Kobalt tools are now sold exclusively by Lowes.

They have a 135 piece socket set for $150.

Here it is...

Made in the USA and "lifetime hassle-free guarantee". I may have to check this out and see if "hassle-free" means you break the tool, return it to the store and we mail you another one a few weeks later. :rolleyes

My grandfather worked at Sears and had a ton of Craftsman stuff. It just doesn't seem like the new stuff is as high quality as the older stuff. I *do*, however, like their approach to broken tools. As I mentioned above, I'm gonna see how Lowes plans on handling replacements for broken tools.

eh do you guys really break tools? that never happens to me... I cant even imagine busting a socket or a wrench or something.. I guess I could see messing up a torque wrench or some other precision tool maybe... but eh..

Sheared the nut to my motor mount with a craptastic Craftsman socket.

I've stripped a few wally world sockets before, but never something of any real quality. Generally, if you have to force something THAT MUCH, there's a better, different way of doing things.

my grandfather broke a snap-on wrench.....the guy at the store looked at it, then at him, and said, "we'll replace it, just dont tell us how you did it" they dont like that kinda stuff leaking out. Snap-on is supposedly unbreakable.
