ANd a failed speed sensor will make your tack, odomoeter, nad spedometer not work
WTF Explain to me how a speed sensor, which measures rotations of the rear wheels, helps the tach work. The tach gets its signal usually from the spark plug at the first cylinder.
The 1989-1990 240SX w/ KA24E, 1991-1994 240SX w/ KA24DE, 1991-1995 180SX w/ SR20DET, and 1991-1994 S13 Silvia w/ SR20DET all use the exact same speed sensor.
You need a DOHC tach to read the tach signal from an SR or KA24DE.

I would start by tracking the speedometer circuit. One time my speedo stopped working, I looked under the hood and noticed the speedo wire off the transmission simply fell out of the connector. Track the circuit, start at the speed sensor, follow it to the connectors below the battery, from there it goes around the front on the engine bay to the drivers side, into the dash, and up into the gauge cluster. The wire colors are yellow with black stripe and yellow with a blue stripe next to the speed sensor through to the cluster.
