Knocking?

So im jus hanging outside with my friend and we are talking and the J30 is jus idleing. so after 10 mins it starts to make this rattling noise. sometimes the noise gets loud and sometimes it gets low but it is not constant. me and my buddy believe it was a knock. when the noise got loud it sounded like a rod bearing. i turn it off for another 10-15 mins then turn it on and the noise is still there. i take it home turn it off then back on and then the noise is minimal. i have 184k on the motor. i was curious if anybody has had the same problem and it is something simple and not what i think. suggestioons are welcome

i've heard of a few J's doing that. Mine does it too occasionally.

I've heard it's actually the vvt solenoid. down in the engine near the same labor involved as the knock sensor replacement. And last post I saw about it said it was about a $1500 job to fix.

ok so i guess that means that the vvt solenoid is bad. is there ne writeup that tells you how to change it? and why would it want to make a noise like that? thanks for all your help

The engine solenoid replacement is common due to age. Its very labor intensive.

Are you running the required minimum octane 91 gasoline in the car? The car will knock if the right gas isn't used.

It won't knock at idle tho. That's when he said he heard it.

when im driving i dont hear it. im not to sure if the car is insulated so well i dont hear it or if it doesnt do it while i drive. i will test it out. but when i fired it this morning i didnt hear it.
