I have a 1990 N/A automatic.. Ive had it for almost two years. I just got re-united with her, after almost a year.
So recently I started to drive it around and look into it. It had always been my dream car.. lol. And thats why I joined this forum...

So on to the problem.. Everytime I start to step on it there is very hard knock right under the center console. I can also hear the same knock, but less slightly if I go over a bump or if the road is uneven. I dont know if im describing it right..
I think this might be the transmission mount. But when I mentioned it to my dad, whom I left it to take care of, he told me that he had changed it. He only drove it a couple of times, so he says. So my question is... what else can it be if not that?

Does it only knock at a certain RPM range? Sounds like possible failing hydraulic lifters, and if so I would not drive it in that condition as prolonged failed lifters can cause block and cam damage. I have the same thing going on with mine and am about to rebuild the engine.

oh, im sorry. i may have described it wrong. um, i looked around here and a "knocking" would best describe the lifters. but this sound is not coming from the engine...
the car is in park or just stop, put it on drive and just even stepping on the gas while its stop causes the "bang" noise. its like if someone is hitting the bottom of the car, oh yea and the shift knob kind of shakes but just a little bit. i hope that makes any clearer. lol.

thanks btw.

well the engine is always spinning even in park, so if its a lifter knock then you can potentially hear any time the car is running. Is it a constant maybe 5-10 knocks per second sorta thing or just one here and there? As an example, when sitting in my car, my lifter knock sounds as if maybe an obstruction was impeding the electric fan and being kit by the prop, it doesnt sound like a damaging sound, at least from inside the car, but open the hood or listen from below and you hear more clearly how nasty a noise it is making. Does your phone record audio? Perhaps you could record an mp3 of the noise and post it.

shifter support bracket? these things break and allow the shifter to contact the U joint directly below, could also be the U joint itself or the trans mount

no.. i dont hear it when its running at any time. just when i step on the gas after its been stop.. but i'll try to get that sound clip tomorrow. I hope it doesnt break something while im doing it, lol, i havent used it since i noticed the noise...

i think it might be something to do with the shifter, or the u-joint. thats kind of the general area i hear the "hit" coming from... well, i'll check tomorrow when i get out of work.
