Well, I would like some help on this problem, but this being my first post, I figure I'll go ahead and introduce myself first. I'm 19, I live in Richmond, Va, and have owned a red 1996 240sx for about three and a half years. I have big plans for the car, but my funds have not allowed me to really pursue my goals with the car. As for now, I can only keep it in good condition and hope that I can find a higher paying job. I have been reading up on many things on this website just trying to learn as much as I can about various things.

Anyways, on to the problem. I will try to describe it the best I can. My car has had this problem since I first bought it, but it hasn't gotten any worse since I've had the car, and I am now getting desperate to fix it. Their is a knocking sound coming from the rear of my car. It happens under more than one circumstance. Say I'm in first or second gear and I'm coming to a stop. I push in the clutch somewhere in the 1500 to 2000 rpm range. That's when I hear one, or sometimes two or three knocks. I can even feel it. It feels like something just bouncing around back there. Also, say I'm cruising in 4th or 5th gear and I kind of smack the gas pedal with my foot, I can hear the knock sound two or three times and the car kind of bounces back and forth.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be? A worn bushing? Any help is much appreciated.

Check your carrier bearing on the drive shaft, I had a similar noise when I was at a similar RPM on the accel and decel. If its not that, I'm out of ideas.

could also be loose bolts on the output shafts at the diff buddy of mine didnt tighten them enough and it acted similer and got worse as they got looser, also acted that way with the carrier bearing, so you have to options to check outnow instead of one im thinking what skinny said unless your diff has been swaped

, I have a 95 S14 and have similar noises coming from my rear end, mine has reached the point now where I have awful bump steer along with the knocking. Unfortunately like you I don't have the funds to upgrade to poly or solid bushings.

what you're hearing is phantom clunk in your subframe.

I actually took my 95 in today to have that problem looked at. There was a thought of the carrier bearing, but it turned out to be the subframe bushings.

Look harder, they're out there. I ordered mine for $54 shipped on amazon (part # 71117.R) I'm too nice. If you got the right tools available then installing them shouldn't be too hard but it will still be a PIA, as it is with any bushing.

This is exactly what it is.

I went with the solid aluminum bushings and haven't heard the damn clunk since. And I never will have to replace those f***ers again. The ride really isn't rough I don't see why some people say it is with solid aluminum bushings.....they must just be pu$$ies.
