hello, i just got finished doing a swap on my 89 240hb. its a 95 rps13 blacktop with a pfc d jetro, apexi pfc boost control kit and a hks dli. i have other various bolt ons but nothing that would contribute to this i dont think. well yesterday replaced the water pump due to a bad bearing and some leakage.

today i took it to 3000rpm, everything sounded good so kept going until my rev limiter kicked in at 5000rpm(i set it at 5000k until i get the bugs sorted out). my car looses a lot of power so i pulled back in and saw that my intercooler hose had popped off and a steady knocking sound was coming from the front of my head that would go up and down with the rpms, it sounds like a mechanical knock sound.

the knock meter on the pfc doesnt read anything right now although it was picking up trace amounts of knock a couple of times on previous days when i would let off the trottle suddenly. by trace amounts i mean one or two bars for a second at the most. i let the car cool down and sit for a while and i started it again. the knocking sound is still there and is steady with rpms, also when the engine would start warming up the idle gets worst.

i have my boost set at .8 bar. and i havent touched the base maps since i just got finished hooking up everything for the swap. the only things i touched on the pfc were the boost control option, setting boost at .8 bar and the new 5k redline. i cant really think about anything else that would be useful information but if you need to know anything else about the car please ask. thanks in advance for your help.

If the knock was for sure coming from the head then it is likely the lifters. Hydraulic lifters have to be bled if the oil managed to drain out of them. It will make a clacking sound.

Is your oil pan dinted? I had a similar problem. My car ran for about 30 seconds, there was a lack of oil due to the pan being dented. I pounded mine out for a quick fix and waited for the new one to arrive.

The pick up is super close a little dent can do alot. Im hoping my engine is OK... and i think it is.

Good Luck

yeah its definately not a clicking sound. ill check out the lifters asap. the oil pan has been banged out pretty good especially around the pick up, oil pressure light isnt on so i figured i did a pretty good job at it. thanks for the responces.

hey, i got a s13 redtop. just got it running good today, took over to a friends and ran perfect. We drove it to his friends place and it made some slight ticking noise. Then when we got to the dudes house i killed the car, started it back up right away to see where the noise was coming from and it was louder. Well i figured to let it cool, so i did. Started it back up and the noise was there, went away after lil rpm. Well we were driving back and the noise was getting more constant and louder. it sorta sounds like theres a bolt or nut inside the engine moving around or something. so i checked the oil, half way. so i topped it off and started it up, same noise. the oil light came on at this point...any suggestions?? im hoping its not the oil pump ($180 from Phase2 cuz they dont warranty that even tho its part of the motor and not an accessory) and possibly just a dent in the pan.

are you sure the ticking isnt the coilpacks firing? my water pump sounded like there was gravel in the bearing and it was leaking pretty bad so i replaced it asap. so it could be the oil pump but i would be sure you know where the sound is coming from to be sure, its a lot of work to replace for nothing. also you may want to replace the front main seal while the pulley and oil pump are off, if it turns out to be that. but try what craig sugested and carefully bang out your oil pan, especially around the pickup area, and see if that helps with the oil pressure situation.
