Everything went well and now it was time to start the engine with out an exhaust. We had to start the engine with just the downpipe put in so im not sure if that was the problem. The engine sounds great other then the knocking noise coming from the valve cover. We couldnt see what was the problem, some problems that we might think it is are bent or loose valve, something inside valve is loose, other then that we are clueless so any help would definetly be great guys. Maybe this might help, engine has 60k, 98 Silvia motor, front clip.

Could be missing a shim. What ever the case may be, you should at least pull the valve cover and take a detailed inspection before you run it anymore.

Couldent that also be the timing chain hitting the timing chain guide?...

they didn't make redtop's in 98.

91-93 were the only redtops(maybe 94 but I don't think so)

They did make the blacktop all the way to 98

otherwise it would have to be an s14/15 motor.

Lest we forget that Hydraulic Lash Ajusters are used. There could be some air in them.

They are the pivots on which the back of the rockers hit. You drop them in oil and use a paper clip or something smaller that will fit and press the nozzle on them down until all the air is bleed. Be sure to keep them upright after pulling them from the oil or you could get air back in. I find a shim unlikely but of course it is possible.

Timing chain hitting the guide could be an issue could also be a lack of oil in the tensioner or along the chain. Are we sure the proper amount of oil is in and the pressure is good????

If it is the timing chain hitting the guide you may want to remove the guide and keep it off or buy a new one or as llamabeta said.

Thank anyways guys, I got the problem solve. I started the engine again and let it run for about 30 minutes and by the time it was 5 or 10 minutes the ticking noise went out. Thanks to HeavyThrottle, the number one source for SR MOTOR AND HELP >> recommended......
